‎Plancks Gesetz und Lichtquantenhypothese. - [THE BIRTH OF QUANTUM STATISTICS]‎

‎Berlin, Springer, 1924. 8vo. In contemporary halv cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In ""Zeitschrift für Physik"", Bd. 26, 1924. Entire volume offered. Stamp to front free end-paper and titlepage, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 178-81. [Entire volume: IV, 401 pp.].‎

‎First appearance of Bose's seminal paper in which he succeeded in deriving the Planck blackbody radiation law without reference to classical electrodynamics. Einstein was extremely impressed by Bose's paper and translated it into German himself. Shortly after Einstein made a generalization of Bose's method which led to the first of two systems of quantum statistical mechanics, known as the Bose-Einstein statistics. Paul Dirac coined the term ""boson"" for particles that obey these statistics and later physics historian Abraham Dirac described it as a ""confused masterpiece"", (Pais, Inward Bound, P. 283). ""With their work Bose and Einstein established the field of quantum statistics one year before the appearance of quantum mechanics"" (Brandt, The Harvest of a Century, P. 139).""In July 1924 he sent a short manuscript entitled ""Plancks Gesetz und Lichtquantenhypothese"" to Albert Einstein for criticism and possible publication. Einstein himself translated the paper into German and had it published in the Zeitschrift für Physik later that year. He added a note that stated: ""In my opinion Boses derivation of the Planck formula signifies an important advance. The method used also yields the quantum theory of the ideal gas as I will work out in detail elsewhere."" (DSB).""2 July 1924. Satyendra Nath Bose introduces a new coarse-grained statistical counting procedure which leads to Planck's radioation law. [...] Bose's discovery of a new statistics for photons and Einstein's extension to material gases - including the phenomenon of BE condensation - were made well before anyone had ever heard of a Schroedinger wave function. Bose's derivation of Planck's law is a confused masterpiece. His reasoning is correct but, as he himself once said, he had no idea that it was novel. The Paper also contains the discovery of BE condensation, an effect without application at that time."" (Pais, Inward Bound, P. 283-4).The present volume contains the following papers of interest:Fermi: Über die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Quantenzustände.

Scient. Reg. Paris. Habuit Wittembergae.‎

‎Leipzig, Grosse & Gleditsch, 1753. 4to. Contemp. full vellum. Faint handwritten title on spine. Two small stamps on titlepage. In: ""Nova Acta Eruditorum Anno MDCCLII"". Occassional brownspotting. The entire volume offered. Pp. 466-480. [Entire issue: (6), 720, (26) pp + 6 plates].‎

‎First printing of Bose's paper on astronomical observations of the moon. ""Bose, a merchant's son, was educated at the University of Leipzig, where he concentrated on philosophy, mathematics, and languages. In 1727 he received the M.A. and joined the philosophy faculty as a junior lecturer (Assessor) in mathematics and physics. In 1738 he accepted the chair of natural philosophy (Naturlehre) at the University of Wittenberg, where he remained until 1760, when the Prussians carried him off to Magdeburg as a hostage of war."" (DSB).""The Wittenberg professor Georg Matthias Bose was a main actor in the transformation of electricity from an academic branch of natural investigation into a fashionable amusement. If, during the 1730s, both Stephen Gray at the Royal Society of London and Charles Du Chisternay Dufay at the Académie des Sciences in Paris devoted themselves to the investigation of the electric matter, it was Bose and other ""Saxon virtuosi"" that, as the Gentleman's Magazineacknowledged in 1745, made electricity a subject à-la-mode, with ""princes willing to see this new fire that man produced from himself, and which did not descend from heaven."" (Bertucci, Therapeutic Attractions: Early Applications of Electricity to the Art of Healing, P. 271).Many other papers by influential contemporary mathematicians, philosophers and historians are to be found in the present volume. ‎

‎Physiologie de l'ascension de la sève. Traduit par Nicolas Deniker‎

‎P., Gauthier-Villars, 1927, un volume in 8 relié en demi-chagrin marron, couvertures conservées (reliure de l'époque), 27pp., 286pp., 93 figures dans le texte‎

‎---- PREMIERE EDITION FRANCAISE ---- "Bose's improvemens in the coherer, a tube of iron filings widely used as an early forme of radio detector, were of both scientific and technological importance, and led him to formulate a more general theory of the properties of contact-sensitive substances that figures in the history of solid-state physics. Bose was struck by the way in which the responses of certain inorganic substances to various stimuli resembled biological response. That observation led him to compare the behaviors of animal and plant tissue... His papers and lectures on these subjects fell short of general acceptance... Today, when biophysics is a generally recognized discipline and comparative physiology rests on a more scientific basis, the idea that animal and plant tissues exhibit similar responses seems less controversial and may even be taken as foreshadowing Norbert Wiener's cybernetics. Bose aroused general admiration, however, for the extremely sensitive automatic recorders he devises to measure plant growth with great precision and for the way in which he used them to accumulate records of microscopic changes causes by various stimuli .

‎Wycliffite Controversies,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, XIV+359 p., 1 b/w ill., 2 b/w tables, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503534572.‎

‎An interdisciplinary contribution to the latest scholarship on Wyclif, Wycliffism, and lollardy. The philosophical and theological ideas of John Wyclif, their dissemination among clerical and lay audiences, and the movement of religious dissent associated with his name all provoked sharp controversies in late medieval England. This volume brings together the very latest scholarship on Wyclif and Wycliffism, with its contributors exploring in interdisciplinary fashion the historical, literary, and theological resonances of the Wycliffite controversies. Far from adhering to the traditional binary divide between 'orthodoxy' and 'heresy' as a tool for explaining the religious turmoil of the late fourteenth, fifteenth, and early sixteenth centuries, essays here explore the construction and rhetorical use of those terms, collectively producing a more nuanced account of the religious history of pre-Reformation England. Topics include the use of religious lyrics and tables of lessons as indirect rebuttals of Wycliffite claims; the social networks through which dissenters transmitted their ideas; dissenting and mainstream readings of Scripture; the 'survival' of Wycliffism in the run-up to Henry VIII's reformation; and the fate of Wyclif and Wycliffism in later historiography. Leading contributors include Anne Hudson, Alastair Minnis, and Peter Marshall. Languages : English.‎
