Gilt title and four raised bands to spine. Edges of boards and all edges gilt. Wear to extremeties and cracks to outer upper hinges. Bookbinder's label pasted to verso of front free endpaper (Stangenbergs Bokbindare). A minor waterstain to the last couple of leaves and a few scattered brownspots. With 8 engraved plates. (4),454 pp. + 7 engraved plates (including the frontispiece) + the illustrated title-page (fully complete).

Gilt title and five raised bands to spine. Gilt line- and floral borders to boards and inner dentelles. The inner dentelles consist of two stamps of which one is known from a signed Derome binding made for Louis XVI. Edges of boards and all edges gilt. Endpapers in pink moiré. (Presumably by Derome.). Gilt label (""Renouard Lainé"") to pasted down front endpaper. Internally clean. (24),600,CCXL pp.
A beautiful, well preserved unsigned binding, probably by the renowned French bookbinder Nicolas Denis Derome.
Königsberg, Universitätsbuchhandlung, 1823. Small 8vo. Bound in a fine contemporary full mauve morocco, profusely gilt spine and broad gilt borders on covers, inner gilt borders. All edges gilt. Cover-edges with a gilt border. Well-preserved binding in periodic style.

Bumpus of Oxford St., a London department store that sold books, was known for classically designed, well-executed, and generally undervalued bindings produced under the Bumpus name for a substantial period, beginning in the latter part of the 19th century.

Gilt lettering on spine. The gilding is in grolier-style with arabesque-bands. Broad inside gilt borders. Edges gilt. Free endpapers and covers inside with green silk. The binding is signed in gold on foot of inside froncover ""Tout. Binder"". The 2 novels were published in monthly installments, bound as such and with original printed wrappers from Ainsworth's Magazine: ""A Monthly Miscellany of Romance, General Literature and Art. Edited by William Harrison Ainsworth"". With a lithographed portrait of William Maginn and 11 plates in steel-etching by Cruikshank.
