The paintings decorate the western gallery of the Luxembourg Palace, depicting allegorical scenes from the life of the Queen Mother, Maria de' Medici (1573-1642), offering insight into her relationship with her late husband Henri IV (1553-1610) and her son Louis XIII (1601-43) as well as her role as Queen Mother after her husband's death. Volume 1 is text, detailing the process of the Medici Commission and continuing the Catalogue Raisonnee, accompanied by 268 illustrations in Volume 2.The second contract of the Commission was for a second gallery in the eastern wing of the palace which remained unfinished after 1631, the paintings in which would have commemorated Henri IV.
