‎Summary Andrew of Saint Victor was one of the most prominent biblical scholars of the twelfth century. He was a regular canon of the Parisian abbey of St Victor, founded in 1108, which in the twelfth century had developed into a prestigious center of spiritual learning, closely connected to the nascent university in Paris. Because of his frequent use of Jewish exegetical materials, Andrew's commentaries are a rich source for the history both of biblical hermeneutics and of inter-religious dialogue during the Middle Ages. His Isaiah commentary caused outrage among medieval Christian scholars because it eschewed traditional christological interpretations, and instead offered a reading "according to the Hebrew." This translation makes this work accessible in English for the first time. The source text of this volume was published in 2021 by Frans van Liere (Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis, 53C). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation. Outre livrer des informations aux Soviétiques, il s'emploiera à couvrir d'autres agents sur lesquels pèse le soupçon. Après la victoire des Alliés, il est chargé par Georges VI de récupérer en Allemagne un dossier compromettant sur le "philonazisme" du duc de Windsor, ex-Edouard VIII, et devient inspecteur des tableaux de la collection royale puis directeur de l'illustre Institut Courtauld. La carrière prestigieuse de ce membre à part entière de l'establishment ne sera pas brisée lorsque, en 1964, il acceptera de passer aux aveux sur ses activités d'espion et celles de ses "complices" en échange d'une immunité totale. Ce sera le secret le mieux gardé d'Angleterre jusqu'en 1979, quand le journaliste Andrew Boyle révélera tout dans son livre « Un climat de trahison ». ‎

Bound in black half morocco, gilt title on front cover and spine. All edges gilt. Raised gilt spine ( expertly rebacked ). Marbled end papers. Inscribed on the title page by the artist Andrew MacCallum to Robert Hoe Esq. . With the ex-libris of Robert Hoe tipped in on the first paste down. Binding with some small traces of use but on the whole a very fine copy with a stainless interior. The English landscape painter Andrew MacCallum ( 1821 - 1902 ) conceived this publication in memory of his deceased wife Susan Irlam whom had died in Antibes ( Southern France ) on the 24th of December 1875. The first photograph in the album is a portrait of his wife. The album consists of 28 large original photographs of his paintings, mounted on thick album leaves, with a printed caption underneath. The landscapes were made in Venice, Berchtensgraden, Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa , Rome, Fontainbleau.... Provenance. From the library of Robert Hoe (1839 - 1909), with a manuscript ex-dono from the artist and Hoe's ex-lbris. The library of Robert Hoe, first president of the Grolier Club, was auctioned in 1911-1912. Nearly half of the books were bought by Henry Huntingdon. Obviously a very rare publication. OCLC lists only one copy ( Mills College - Olin Library in Oakland CA. ).‎
