‎Édition originale du premier ouvrage illustré sur la médecine chinoise publié en Europe. Ces traductions du latin résultent d'une version médiévale tardive du Mo cheh (Instructions relatives au pouls) et d'autres courts textes sont l'uvre du jésuite polonais Michael Boym (1612-1659). Ils ont été publiés, sans mention de Boym, par Andreas Cleyer (1634-1697), un médecin de la Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes orientales qui uvrait à Java dans les années 1660 et plus tard au Japon. Le seul ouvrage occidental imprimé antérieurement sur la médecine chinoise était une courte collection non illustrée de traductions jésuites d'uvres chinoises similaires intitulées : « Secrets de la médecine chinoise » (Grenoble 1671). Les textes traduits ici, dont plusieurs sont de Vam Xo Ho (ou Wang Shu-ho), traitent principalement des théories relatives au pouls, et le lien étroit avec l'acupuncture est largement discuté. Lun des chapitres donne des remèdes pour différents types de troubles du pouls, tandis quun autre sur la matière médicale énumère et décrit 289 plantes, avec des transcriptions phonétiques de leurs noms chinois, et leurs noms latins où les plantes ont été identifiées. La dernière section contient 36 descriptions de divers symptômes pathologiques tels que l'apparence de la langue, illustrés par des gravures sur bois de langues avec des légendes décrivant la décoloration localisée, etc. Les curieuses gravures, copiées d'une source chinoise, probablement Lei ching de Chang Chieh-Pin (1624) comprennent plusieurs gravures anatomiques d'organes ainsi que "les premières cartes d'acupuncture publiées en Occident, malheureusement qualifiées « danatomiques » par les écrivains occidentaux, provoquant beaucoup de confusion et de mauvaises critiques" (Norman). First edition of the first illustrated work on Chinese medicine published in Europe. These translations from Latin result from a late medieval version of the Mo cheh (Pulse Instructions) and other short texts are the work of the Polish Jesuit Michael Boym (1612-1659). They were published, without mention of Boym, by Andreas Cleyer (1634-1697), a physician of the Dutch East India Company who worked in Java in the 1660s and later in Japan. The only Western work previously printed on Chinese medicine was a short, unillustrated collection of Jesuit translations of similar Chinese works entitled "Secrets of Chinese Medicine" (Grenoble 1671). The texts translated here, several of which are by Vam Xo Ho (or Wang Shu-ho), deal mainly with theories about the pulse, and the close connection with acupuncture is discussed at length. One of the chapters gives remedies for various types of pulse disorders, while another on medical material lists and describes 289 plants, with phonetic transcriptions of their Chinese names, and their Latin names where the plants have been identified. The last section contains 36 descriptions of various pathological symptoms such as the appearance of the tongue, illustrated by woodcuts of tongues with captions describing the localized discoloration, etc. The curious engravings, copied from a Chinese source, probably Chang Chieh-Pin's Lei ching (1624) include several anatomical engravings of organs as well as "the first acupuncture charts published in the West, unfortunately labeled 'anatomical' by Western writers, causing much confusion and bad reviews" (Norman). Part of Boym's translation of the section on the pulse was abbreviated and paraphrased into English in the second volume of John Floyer's Physician's Pulse Watch (1707-10). Floyer, likely influenced by Chinese theories, was the first European physician to advocate regular pulse observations. (mm. 390x285), 12 volumi, legatura edit. in mz. marocchino con ang. (restauri e picc. mancanze), tit. oro al dorso e filetti dorati ai piatti. Questa importante e celebrata opera sull'avifauna dell'Europa centrale e specialmente della Germania, è illustrata da complessive 446 (su 450) tavole f.t. stampate su cartoncino (1 in più rispetto all'Indice) di cui: 391 sono in cromolitografia e raffigurano ca. 1500 uccelli ritratti nel loro ambiente naturale - 48 (su 49), pure in cromolito, sono dedicate alle uova - 7 (su 10) sono in b.n. (per lo più anatomiche). Vi sono raffigurati: tordi, passeracei, cinciallegre, allodole, capinere, fringuelli, storni, uccelli da preda, colombi, gallinacei, ibis, otarde, pivieri, beccacce, anatre, pellicani, procellarie, ecc. Al ns. esemplare "mancano 4 tavole" (17a - 17b con uova - 17c - 17d) e "32 pagine" (da 177 a 208) nel vol. XII, qui presenti in fotocopia (anche a colori). "Terza edizione", rielaborata da Berg, Blasius.. ed edita da Hennicke. Mantiene la suddivisione in 12 voll. (come la seconda ediz.) e riprende il più ampiamente possibile il testo di Naumann, con aggiunte e correzioni, oltre alla descrizione di nuove specie. Tutte le tavole sono state rifatte e alcune sono completamente nuove.Gli artisti che hanno realizzato le magnifiche composizioni - originariamente incise e colorate da Johann Frederich Naumann (figlio di Johann Andreas) ma le cui lastre andarono perdute - sono: Bruno Geisler, A. Goering, J.G. Keulemans, O. Kleinschmidt, O. v. Riesenthal, E. de Maes e altri. Le uova, raggruppate in tavole separate, sono di Alex. Reichert.A quest'opera di Johann Andreas Naumann (1744-1826), collaborò soprattutto il figlio Johann Friedrich (1780-1857), effettivo autore del testo e delle illustrazioni; è considerata la più bella opera tedesca di ornitologia per la perfezione e l'accurata rappresentazione degli uccelli.
