Le premier manuel de géographie et d'histoire destiné aux enfants britanniques éduqués à l'Île Maurice, alors sous le contrôle de l'Angleterre depuis 1814. L'ouvrage est illustré d'une carte de l'Île Maurice sur double page, premier projet de l'auteur qui déclare dans une préface avoir voulu pallier un manque de matériel pédagogique relatif à l'Île Maurice : « [T]he columns of the press have, on more than one occasion, made allusion to the anomalous practice of teaching the youth of the island the geography of other lands, and of leaving them, as is still too frequently the case, in ignorance of that of their own. » (p. III). Après une brève introduction qui reprend les notions essentielles de la géographie, une seconde section du manuel se penche plus spécifiquement sur la géographie de l'Île Maurice. Elle est divisée en chapitres correspondant aux districts de l'île : Port-Louis, abritant les principales institutions et le commerce maritime ; Pamplemousses et ses jardins botaniques ; la barrière de corail de Savanne ; Moka, lieu des expériences autour du guano... Suivent de brèves considérations sur la flore, la faune et le climat de l'île, un chapitre sur la canne à sucre, 15 pages de tables statistiques, une chronologie des gouverneurs britanniques de l'île, un calendrier des jours fériés et une liste des écoles britanniques de l'Île Maurice. Mention de 2e mille (second thousand). Trois corrections à l'encre, dont une mentionnée dans l'errata. L'un des trois éléments de l'errata a été corrigé à l'impression. Nous n'avons pu localiser que 5 exemplaires de l'ouvrage : King's College London, Cambridge, Harvard, British library, dont un seul en France (BNU). Provenance : " Eug: Leclezio esq. re " [Eugène Leclezio esquire], mention manuscrite à l'encre sur la première garde blanche. Eugène Pierre Jules Le Clézio (1832-1915) grandit dans le domaine mauricien Eurêka, acquis par son père en 1856. Magistrat, vice-président de la cour suprême de l'Île Maurice, il fut cependant exclu de la maison familiale au profit de son frère, Henry Le Clézio. L'écrivain nobélisé J. M. G. Le Clézio, issu de la branche d'Eugène, ne cessera de revenir à cette période mauricienne de l'histoire de sa famille. Dans Voyage à Rodrigues (1986), il écrit ainsi : " Tous les enfants de Sir Eugène quittent le domaine où ils sont nés, où ils ont grandi heureux. Les garçons voyagent, vont au bout du monde en Amérique, en Afrique, en Europe. Les filles, elles, sont vouées à la pauvreté. La perte d'Euréka me concerne aussi, puisque c'est à cela que je dois d'être né au loin, d'avoir grandi séparément de mes racines dans ce sentiment d'étrangeté, d'inappartenance " (p. 113). Le protagoniste de Le chercheur d'or et Voyage à Rodrigues, inspiré par le grand-père de l'écrivain, est l'un des fils exilés d'Eugène qui revient à l'Île Maurice à la recherche d'un trésor. Frottements, notamment aux mors et coins, papier uniformément bruni hormis la carte. ‎

‎Rare third edition of one of the foundational texts of modern Freemasonry first published in 1723 and here in its expanded and revised form by John Entick. Anderson’s work represents the earliest official codification of Masonic law and practice, combining legendary history with the formal regulations governing the fraternity. “Anderson was a freemason, and when, in 1721, on the revival of freemasonry in England, the grand lodge determined to produce an authoritative digest of the ‘Constitutions’ of the fraternity, the task was assigned to him (ENTICK'S edition (1747) of the Constitutions, p. 194 et seq.). It was as a grand warden of the lodge that he presented to it, on completing his task.
