Il a également écrit sous le nom de Victor Alexandrov Perry.Gosse errant pendant la lutte des Blancs et des Rouges, collégien-bagnard dans l'Allemagne pré-nazie, soldat grec puis confident d'un dictateur athénien, mercenaire dans la Guerre Verte du Honduras, mobilisé dans les S.R. américains, scénariste à Hollywood, il a été un écrivain à succès, traduit en quatorze langues. Ses parents ont quitté le pétrograd lorsqu'il était enfant, en 1918. Ils se sont d'abord installés en Finlande, puis en Allemagne, où son père, Alexandre Perper, avocat et membre du Parti constitutionnel démocratique (cadets), est décédé à Berlin en 1922 . Sa mère, Emma Rybkina, d'origine juive, musicienne et chanteuse, s'est remariée avec l'acteur du cinéma muet russe Ossip Rounitch, à Paris en 1922, puis après son divorce en 1925, avec l'impresario américain Sol Hurok (1888-1974) en 1935.Il a vécu en Allemagne où il fait ses études à Schwarzbourg puis à Athènes en Grèce où il a été éditeur du journal Griechische Post. Après l'arrivée au pouvoir de Ioánnis Metaxás, il quitte la Grèce.Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en 1941, il fut mobilisé dans l'armée américaine d'abord dans le service de renseignement puis en tant que correspondant de guerre. Il a suivi comme journaliste le procès de Nuremberg.Après le succès de sa biographie "Journey Through Chaos" (1945), son premier ouvrage, il a choisi de se consacrer à sa vocation de détective de l'Histoire contemporaine. Les révélations sur l'affaire Toukhatchevski (1962) eurent pour principal lecteur Nikita Khrouchtchev qui fut contraint de les mentionner devant les membres du Conseil des ministres de l'URSS.Auteur de livres antifascistes, il a été également scénariste pour le cinéma et la télévision notamment du film Les Maudits (1947). Réalisé par René Clément, le film a obtenu le "Grand prix du film d'aventure et policier" au festival de Cannes. Photos sur demande.‎
