Introuvable pendant des années, cet ouvrage est le " seul livre sérieux sur ce que l'on pourrait appeler le monde occulte aborigène ", écrit J. Beckett dans sa préface. A travers le personnage central du chaman, du Grand Initié, Elkin, professeur à l'Université du Queensland, nous donne sa propre compréhension de la religion australienne. Dans une première partie, il examine la personnalité de l'homme-médecine, ainsi que le long apprentissage qui fait accéder à cette condition, les rites d'initiation souvent excessifs et les pouvoirs qui sont acquis au terme de cette expérience. Elkin passe ensuite à l'étude comparative de ce phénomène sur tout le continent australien. Région par région, en s'appuyant sur ses notes de terrain et en puisant à des sources non publiées jusque-là, il dresse un panorama de nos connaissances sur cette culture. La troisième partie est pour Elkin l'occasion de s'interroger sur le renouveau du rôle des Grands Initiés, notamment face à la médecine blanche, et d'approfondir la question de l'expérience mystique contenue dans l'initiation. A la différence de la plupart des anthropologues qui l'ont précédé, A.P. Elkin ne cherche pas à expliquer la nature des pouvoirs que détiennent les hommes-médecine. Il décrit les rites, expose la pratique du métier, admettant que ces pouvoirs sont incompréhensibles en terme de rationalité occidentale. Cette plongée dans un univers qui rejoint la mythologie la plus ancienne de la terre reste ainsi la meilleure introduction pour comprendre le secret aborigène.
