‎"0. Paris, chez Les Auteurs Quay de L'Horloge du Palais ; Boudet Libraire Imprimeur du Roi rue St. Jacques, 1757, 2 vols in-folio, size of the leaves 55.8 x 80 cm (large paper copy), engraved title page + (2)(Avertissement) + 34 pp (Préface Historique, Table des Articles) + 103 + 5 (= 108 ) double page maps with original outline colouring and with original stencilled title on the verso. The titles of the last 5 maps (numbered 104-108) have been entered in the ''Table des Articles'' in ink by a contemporary hand. Bound in modern halfleather (original bookblocks retained), gilt leather title labels on spine. Nicely preserved large paper copy of the first edition of this great French 18th-century atlas. The maps printed on strong paper and coloured in outline. A few maps have as re-inforcement a strip of paper tipped on in the lower fold, the margins of a few text leaves have also strips of paper tipped on, there are a few occasional inkstains or thumbing (mostly on the verso side or in the margin, not on the maps). Generally the atlas is in a very fine condition and absolutely complete with its 108 double page maps. Some copies have a list of subscribers which is not present in our copy. In all over 1.100 copies of this atlas were printed of which 601 in '' grand papier ''. Complete copies are now rare. Important is that the Vaugondys published the sources of their maps which makes the Atlas valuable to understanding the development of geographical knowledge in the 18th century. The first 12 maps deal with ancient cartography. 91 maps deal with the modern world, of which 8 relate to America. The 5 last maps (added in the table) are roadmaps of France and the adjacent countries (Cartes de Postes). (See at length ; Mary Pedley - Bel et Utile. The work of the Robert de Vaugondy Family of Mapmakers).."‎
