- illisible). Elle eut été plus digne de lui etre offerte si j'avais pris, en la composant, meilleurs de ses conseils" ---- "The ablest and best surgeon of his time was Guillaume Dupuytren (1777/1835), at once a shrewd diagnostician, an operator of unrivaled aplomb, a wonderfull clinical teacher and a good experimental physiologist and pathologist. He was the first to excise the lower jaw and to treat aneurysm successfully by compression, the first to treat wry-neck by subcutaneous section of the sternomastoid muscle and performed many feats in vascular surgery, such as the successful ligation of the external iliac and two ligations of complicated by aneurysm, devised an original method of treating artificial anus by means of a compressing enterotome of his invention, but his most enduring title to modern fame is in the field of surgical pathology. His original congenital dislocation of the hip-joint and retraction of the fingers from affection of the palmar aponeurosis, for which he devised an operation, are his greatest works...". (Garrison "History of medicine" p. 488/490) ---- "LITHOTOMY was among Dupuytren's lifelong medical interests and both his first and last works were devoted to that subject. Lithotomie, published at Paris in 1812, was his winning thesis in the competitive examination held that year for the chair of operative medicine and surgery at the Hôtel-Dieu". (Cf.
