‎SLND [Inde, circa 1850] 1850 1 vol. in-8° (202 x 140 mm.) composée de 20 paneaux joints dont 1 blanc et 19 gouaches originales contrecollées sur carton légendées à l'encre brune en Français et en sanscrit. (papier un peu jaunis, petits comblements marginaux). Reliure orientale en acordéon composée de 20 cartons recouverts de papier gauffré rouge au verso (salissures et petits défauts d'usage aux coupes).‎

‎Superbe collection de 19 peintures représentant les habitant dInde, chacune légendées en français et probablement en tamil. Réalisées par un artiste local à la gouache et à laquarelle dans des coloris vifs demeurés très frais, ces peintures donnent le portrait en pieds des habitants de lInde vers le milieu du 19éme siècle dans leurs habits traditionnels. Tenues, visages, bijoux sont particulièrement soignés par l'artiste. Une même main les a ainsi titrées en français et en tamoul à lencre brune : « Bramine, Ecrivain, Femme décrivain, Mahratte, Femme de mahratte, Vaïchnava, Femme de Vaïchnava, Piou, Femme de Piou, Tailleur, Femme de Tailleur, Pakiry, Femme de Pakiry, Parichien, Femme de Parichien, Blanchisseur, Blanchisseuse, Rasapoutrien, Marchand dhuile ». Sa longueur entierement dépliée est de prés de trois metres. Ces portraits sont typiques de lart indien. Ils pouvaient etre réalisés sur papier ou différents supports comme livoire ou le mica. Ils étaient trés prisés par les européen désireux de les rapporter dans leur pays. Le plus souvent leur légende est en anglais, ce qui fait loriginalité de celui-ci. Bel ensemble ayant conservé son éclat dorigine. 1 vol. 8vo (202 x 140 mm.) composed of 20 paneaux attached, including 1 white one, and 19 original gouaches pasted on cardboard with captions in French and Sanskrit ink. (paper a little yellowed, small marginal fillings). Oriental binding in acordéon composed of 20 cardboards covered with red embossed paper on the back (soiling and small defects of use to the cuts). Superb collection of 19 paintings representing the inhabitants of India, each captioned in French and probably in tamil. Made by a local artist in gouache and watercolor in vivid colors remained very fresh, these paintings give the portrait in feet of the inhabitants of India around the middle of the 19th century in their traditional clothes. Dresses, faces, jewels are particularly well cared for by the artist. The same hand has titled them in French and tamil in brown ink: "Bramine, Writer, Writer's Wife, Mahratte, Mahratte's Wife, Vaïchnava, Vaïchnava's Wife, Piou, Piou's Wife, Tailor, Tailor's Wife, Pakiry, Pakiry's Wife, Parichien, Parichien's Wife, Bleacher, Bleacher's Wife, Rasaputrien, Oil Merchant". Its fully unfolded length is almost three meters. These portraits are typical of Indian art. They could be made on paper or different supports such as ivory or mica. They were very popular with the Europeans who wanted to bring them back to their country. Most often their legend is in English, which makes the originality of this one. Nice set having kept its original shine.‎
