La même année 1948 paraîtra son premier recueil de vers Der Sand aus den Urnen, illustré de lithographies de son ami le peintre Edgar Jené, né en Sarre en 1904.“Celan published only a small amount of prose, but it is of considerable importance, both in its own right and as an aid in interpreting the poems. In 1948 a poetic essay appeared, following a short preface by Otto Basil, as an introductory text to a book containing reproductions of sveral of Edgar Jene’s paintings and lithographs. The book is exceedingly rare, and Celan’s essay, which has never been reprinted, is practically unknown. (...) New York, 1973, p. 27 - qui consacre tout un chapitre à cette publication.Edgar Jené et sa femme Erika Lilleg ont fréquenté Celan à Vienne en 1948. La peinture de Jené influença profondément le poète. Comme le dit Jerry Glenn, ce livre est d’une excessive rareté. La justification indique un tirage de 700 exemplaires. Paul Celan n’était pas connu en 1948. Ses premiers poèmes avaient paru à Bucarest dans le journal Agora en 1947. Il quitte la Roumanie fin 1947 pour Vienne où il séjourne du 15 janvier au 19 juillet. En février quelques uns de ses poèmes paraissent dans la revue Plan. En juillet, P. Celan part pour Paris.La plupart des exemplaires de son essai sur Jené ont été perdus. Celui-ci provient de la collection Edgar et Erika Jené.‎
