"Une chaude guirlande d'oranges, de cédrats et de citrons suspend l'or des colonies sionistes contre la blancheur des murs". L'autrice de "La conquête de Jérusalem", lauréate du tout premier prix Femina en 1904 (quand il s'appelait encore le "Prix Vie Heureuse"), nous invite au banquet rituel juif du séder de Pessa'h, dans une fascinante déambulation nocturne à travers cette "terre également sainte à tous". L'ouvrage est illustré d'un frontispice et de 4 lithographies à pleine page par Raphaël Drouart (1884-1972), ancien élève de Maurice Denis qui se dirigea vers l'Art Déco au sein du groupe d'artistes L'Evolution fondé en 1925 par Arthur Goldscheider. Un des 50 exemplaires numérotés sur vergé de Hollande van Gelder Zonen à grandes marges, en très belle condition.‎

‎2 volumes in-8 (20 x 12 cm), basane mouchetée (reliure de l’époque), dos lisse orné, pièces de titre et de tomaison en maroquin vert et grenat, roulette dorée encadrant les plats et sur les coupes, tranches marbrées, [4]-xcii-328 ; [4]-376 pages (complet). Quelques rousseurs éparses. Bon état. Nouvelle édition, illustrée d’un portrait de l’auteur en frontispice et de 20 gravures hors-texte réalisées par Barbier l'Aîné. Torquato Tasso (1544-1595) est un poète italien du XVIe siècle, au service de la maison d’Este, à Ferrare. Il s’inspire pour la rédaction de ce poème épique de la première croisade (1095-1099), menée par Godefroi de Bouillon, qui aboutit à la conquête de Jérusalem en 1099. Nous avons ici sa traduction française en vers, donnée par Baour-Lormian (1770-1854), enrichie de la vie de l’auteur. Agréable exemplaire. ‎

‎Summary From Topography to Text: The Image of Jerusalem in the Writings of Eucherius, Adomn n and Bede uses topographical detail to examine the source material, religious imagination and the image of Jerusalem in three related Latin texts from the fifth, seventh and eighth centuries. The work introduces an original methodology for analyzing the Jerusalem pilgrim texts, defined by their core interest in the commemorative topography of the Christian holy places. By newly identifying the topographical material in Adomn n's description of Jerusalem, the study exposes key distortions in the text, its exclusive intramural focus on the Holy Sepulchre and the eschatological image of New Jerusalem that emerges from its description of contemporary Jerusalem. The study verifies the post-Byzantine provenance of Adomn n's topographical material, namely, the oral report of Arculf, thus redressing scholarly ambivalence regarding Adomn n's contemporary source. The new insights into Adomn n's De locis sanctis, including its mental map of Jerusalem, provide a template with which to analyze the text's relationship with the writings of Eucherius and Bede. While Bede's De locis sanctis has commonly been regarded as an epitome of Adomn n's work, when the sequence, structure and images of the texts are compared, Eucherius not Adomn n is, for Bede, the authoritative text. From Topography to Text offers a significant discussion on the Jerusalem pilgrim texts and the Christian topography of the Holy City, while analyzing the image of Jerusalem in the writings of three remote authors who never set foot in the city.
