//// First edition of 'On Gaining Advantage from Misfortune'. Following the execution of his son Giovanni Battista for the murder of his wife, Cardano betook himself assiduously to the writing of books. The chapter upon Grief of this one is a narrative of his son's story. The defense spoken by Cardano for his son was printed at the end of it, together with a fragment of the young man's writing "Upon Foetid foods" and a fatherly laudation of his skill as a physician. This work is meant to provide directions on how to overcome difficult situations and lead a reasonably serene life. "The whole work is written in the temper of a follower of Epictetus, and contains many allusions to its author's private history."
