(4)162 8vo, 19th-century hcalf (a trifle rubbed).A rare edition, probably printed in Paris on paper from Rouen; a paginary reprint of the Geneva first edition published earlier the same year, but omitting a final section on the Verron trial. This is one of many works written by Voltaire at Ferney in his eightieth year. His object was an analysis of the French presence in India, in particular the events leading up to the execution of General Lally after the loss of Pondicherry to the British in 1761. Voltaire's interest in the affair arose from his sense of the injustices inherent in French criminal procedure. Lally was tried five years after the fact, on vague charges which hinted darkly at treason; but he was in truth a scapegoat for mismanagement and the loss of colonial power. La Voix Clémentine.
Genève, La Voix Clémentine, janvier-avril 1911. 2 plaquettes in-8 brochées sous fragiles couvertures imprimées, de 103 pages en tout (pagination continue). Accrocs avec manques minimes et dos fendu au premier numéro, ainsi qu'une petite déchirure au premier feuillet, n'atteignant pas le texte. Nom de possesseur aux contreplats. Mention "Paraît quatre fois par an", qui sera démentie par l'histoire, l'ensemble est donc bien complet en deux livraisons. Premiers plats ornés du bourdon de Clément VII à la cathédrale Saint-Pierre, Cingria ayant annoncé que La Voix Clémentine "parlera haut et clair. Elle parlera la langue de bronze -nuancée de vert-de-gris-, comme la vieille cloche du Pape Clément [...] Elle sera ce que devait être La Voile Latine: un organe destiné à restituer dans tous les domaines: politique, esthétique et religieux UNE MODALITE LEMANIQUE DE L'IDEE LATINE"; on trouve aux seconds plats les armoiries genevoises (II) et "Post tenebras spero lucem" (I).
Le premier numéro s'ouvre sur une préface de Cingria suivie des "Détails sur la fin de la Voile Latine", véritable règlement de comptes avec Robert de Traz. La Voix Clémentine est fondée en effet après dissolution de la "Voile latine" suite à de terribles incompatibilités de vues: les «helvétistes», aux positions nationalistes (Robert de Traz et Gonzague de Reynold), en opposition au concept «latin» d'Alexandre et Charles-Albert Cingria. De son côté, Robert de Traz lancera "Les Feuillets". Cette dispute ira assez loin, témoin l'épisode de la gifle que Charles-Albert Cingria infligea à Gonzague de Reynold sur le parvis de l'église Saint-Joseph le 19 mars 1911, au sortir de la messe du dimanche et qui fit, comme on l'imagine, grand bruit.. Avec des interventions de Alexandre Cingria, Charles-Albert Cingria, Georges Nicole, Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz, Henry Spiess, Ernest Tissot, D. van Moermans. A noter que celle de Ramuz (Deux poèmes en prose) parut sans que l'auteur ait donné son accord, lui qui tenait à se tenir en dehors de cet dispute houleuse. D'une insigne rareté.
