<p>Né en 1541 en Crète, Domenico Theotokopoulos, dit Greco, fait son premier apprentissage dans la tradition byzantine avant de parfaire sa formation à Venise puis à Rome. C'est cependant en Espagne que son art s'épanouit et s'implante durablement à partir de la décennie 1570. Attiré par les mirifiques promesses du chantier de l'Escorial, l'artiste importe dans la péninsule la couleur du Titien, les audaces du Tintoret et la force plastique de Michel-Ange. Cette synthèse, originale mais cohérente par rapport à sa trajectoire, donne au Greco, mort quatre ans après Caravage, une place particulière dans l'histoire de la peinture : celle du dernier grand maître de la Renaissance et du premier grand peintre du Siècle d'Or. Redécouvert à la fin du 19e siècle, reconnu et adopté par les avant-gardes du début du 20e, l'artiste jouit ainsi du double prestige de la tradition et de la modernité, reliant le Titien aux Fauves, le maniérisme au cubisme et au vorticisme. Greco est aussi un prolifique inventeur, renouvelant en profondeur et inventant parfois les iconographies, qu'elles soient chrétiennes ou mythologiques, témoignant toujours d'une grande indépendance d'esprit qui trouve un écho dans la liberté de sa touche comme dans les audaces de sa palette. Het oeuvre van El Greco (1541-1614) is eeuwenlang in de vergeethoek geraakt. In 1908 plaatste de kunsthistoricus Manuel Bartolome Cossio hem echter weer helemaal op de voorgrond.
