‎Excellent ouvrage : des origines au Moyen Age, le XVIe siècle de Marie Stuart à la Révolution de 1689, les XVIIe, XVIIIe siècles et XIXe siècle. — "M. Peter Hume Brown est mort le 30 novembre 1918 à l'âge de soixante-huit ans. Il était né à Haddington le 17 décembre 1850. On lui doit de bonnes biographies de George Buchanan (1890) et de John Knox (1895), mais surtout une remarquable “History of Scotland” en trois volumes (1899-1909). Disciple de Masson, il lui succéda dans sa charge d'historiographe royal d'Ecosse et continua la publication commencée par lui des registres du Conseil privé d'Ecosse ; à partir de 1899, il donna régulièrement presque chaque année un volume de cette grande collection (en tout quinze volumes couvrant la période de 1627 à 1684). Il était devenu en 1901 le premier titulaire de la chaire d'histoire ancienne et de paléographie à l'Université d'Edimbourg". (Revue Historique, 1919) ‎
