One of the most important building projects in late medieval Hungary was the reconstruction of the parish and pilgrimage church of St Elizabeth in Ko'ice (present-day Slovakia). The burghers of this prosperous, free royal town decided to rebuild their main church shortly before 1400, and work continued, with several interruptions, into the late fifteenth century. Along with the ambitious and unusual design that emerged, far-reaching artistic connections with centres such as Prague and Vienna ensure the church's exceptional value for architectural history - not only within Hungary, but in the Central European region as a whole. It is this value as an art historical document that the present work seeks to exploit. It approaches the church's fabric as a source of information about patrons, masons, and congregations, attempting to locate the dynamics behind design choices made. This necessitates a detailed reconstruction of the building enterprise itself, before the focus shifts to the impact of the St Elizabeth's project both in northern Hungary and further afield (Transylvania, Lesser Poland), allowing the town lodge's remarkable achievements be set in inter-regional context. This collection of essays examines diverse facets of the cultural patronage and collecting of Mary of Hungary. Mary of Hungary?s extensive artistic patronage and the collections she formed of an array of artworks, objects and books were by no means an isolated phenomenon within the Habsburg dynasty. On the contrary, the Regent of the Netherlands and loyal adviser to her brother, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, emulated the examples of the Habsburg women who preceded her, and in turn provided an exemplar for those that came after. She continued the traditions, trends and practices her ancestors and peers had established, which had been initiated by female members of the Trast mara dynasty, most notably Isabel of Castile This collection of essays examines the cultural patronage of Mary of Hungary in the light of her multiple identities: a humanist-trained patron of the arts; a Habsburg princess closely implicated in the visual construction and projection of Charles V's political identity across the alliances and divisions of early modern Europe; and a female regent bound by the imperial, dynastic and political ideologies cultivated by the sixteenth-century Habsburg monarchs. Beyond forming one of the most important art collections of the European Renaissance and playing a prominent role in the patronage of the artists she received under her protection, Mary used art to construct an image of herself that undeniably contributed to the consolidation and dissemination of both her political legitimacy and that of her dynasty among the courts of Europe.

This publication is the first to appear in a major new series of catalogues covering all Western medieval illuminated manuscripts in Cambridge, excluding only the manuscripts in the University Library which are being catalogued separately. The entries are based on the most recent studies undertaken by the Cambridge Illuminations Research Project; they are organised geographically by place of origin, and, within that grouping, listed chronologically. The present two-volume catalogue deals with the early manuscripts produced in the Frankish Kingdoms, the splendid, richly illustrated books from the Northern and Southern Netherlands ranging from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century, illuminations from the Meuse region, manuscripts both in Latin and the vernacular from the late eleventh to the end of the sixteenth century from Germany, and lastly an interesting group of books from Bohemia, Austria and Hungary. The focus of the catalogue is on the illumination, and includes detailed listings of all miniatures, decoration and ornamentation, which are made easily accessible by the inclusion of an exhaustive iconographic index. Entries also include much information on the textual contents of the manuscripts and on their provenance, as well as the most recent bibliographical references. Every manuscript catalogued is also illustrated, generally with several images, providing readers with a corpus of some 750 illustrations which are all reproduced in full colour.
