‎George III était le troisième monarque de la maison de Hanovre mais à la différence de ses deux prédécesseurs, il était né en Grande-Bretagne et sa langue maternelle était l'anglais. Le règne et la vie de George III, plus longs que ceux de tous les précédents souverains britanniques, furent marqués par une série de conflits ayant impliqué une grande partie de l'Europe et des territoires jusqu'en Afrique, en Amérique et en Asie. Au début de son règne, la Grande-Bretagne, à l'issue de la guerre de Sept Ans (1756-1763), devint la puissance dominante en Amérique du Nord et en Inde. Puis, un rééquilibrage des puissances eut lieu après la guerre d'indépendance américaine, qui vit les colonies américaines entrer en révolution et acquérir leur autonomie en 1783. La suite de son règne fut marqué à partir de 1793 par des guerres successives contre la France révolutionnaire et napoléonienne qui se terminèrent par la défaite de Napoléon Ier en 1815. ‎
