Superbe dessin exécuté au crayon reproduit en couverture du roman de Robert Raynaud "Le roman du Sahara ( Paris, J. Peyronnet et Cie, 1927), qui fut secrétaire général de l'Institut musulman. Il représente femme du peuple Touareg aux longs cheveux tressés recouverts d'une coiffe, portant de grandes boucles d'oreille circulaires et revétue de ses habits traditionnels. L'artiste a composé sa maquette à partir d'un tirage photographique trés estompé sur papier mat, procédé permettant d'obtenir un travail remarquablement réaliste. Joint au dessin: un exemplaire du livre "Le roman du Sahara" de Robert Raynaud, Paris, 1927. 1 vol in-12° broché. 198 pp. Illustré d'une carte et de photos. Superb drawing executed in pencil reproduced on the cover of the novel by Robert Raynaud "Le roman du Sahara (Paris, J. Peyronnet et Cie, 1927), who was secretary general of the Muslim Institute. It represents a Touareg woman with long braided hair covered with "a headdress, wearing large circular earrings and dressed in traditional clothing. The artist composed his model from a very faded photographic print on matte paper, a process allowing to obtain a remarkably realistic work. Together with the drawing: a copy of the original edition of the book "Le roman du Sahara" by Robert Raynaud, Paris, 1927. 1 vol. in-12° paperback. 198 pp. Illustrated with a map and photos. (Rares rousseurs, ensemble frais). Plein veau marbré glacé d'époque, dos lisse orné, titre de maroquin brun, filet doré sur les coupes, tranches marbrées. (Quelques défauts dusage à la reliure).
Réédition de ce rare essai dans lequel Pierre-Louis de Saintard (1718-1766) expose les conséquences de la présence européenne en Amérique du Nord, alors que la Guerre de Sept Ans était sur le point déclater (E.O.: 1756, Amsterdam). Présentée sous forme de roman épistolaire (lettres datées de juillet à septembre 1756), luvre propose de trouver un équilibre entre les différentes puissances coloniales pour éviter le conflit tout en favorisant le commerce et les échanges. Selon Chadenat, louvrage est : « Intéressant pour lorigine de la guerre du Canada. » Pierre-Louis de Saintard, fils dun propriétaire terrien de Saint-Domingue, travaille pour le compte de la Compagnie des Indes et comprend rapidement que les intérêts divergents des nations européennes en Amérique vont conduire à laffrontement à moins de trouver un équilibre des pouvoirs. Il est également lauteur de: « Essai sur les colonies françoises » (1754) et de « Lettres dun citoyen sur la permission de commercer dans les Colonies » (1756). En 1763, il est membre du Conseil supérieur du Port-au- Prince et député de ce Conseil à l'Assemblée coloniale du Cap. Si les intérêts commerciaux et économiques ne sont pas étrangers à la pensée de Saintard, il est dabord humaniste et son but premier est la paix : « Est-il du moins dans quelque point de notre globe un peuple qui consente à vivre & à laisser vivre les autres ? En parcourant l'univers, nous vîmes l'Europe remplie d'armes & de vaisseaux, & par un événement nouveau dans l'histoire moderne, infesté de pirates ; l'Asie, au sein même de la paix, soumise au glaive militaire ; l'Afrique, dans la barbarie la plus absurde, occupée à vendre ses habitants à d'autres continents. L'Amérique seule restait tranquille après l'épuisement ou l'extinction de ses habitants que la Religion des Espagnols avait détruits : mais ses nouveaux Citoyens ne prennent plus enfin une simple part aux guerres d'Europe ; il s'est élevé une contestation propre à l'Amérique dont les étincelles, si l'on ne parvient à étouffer ce feu naissant, embraseront avec le temps son continent ; & en l'accoutumant à des intérêts principaux et personnels, le sépareront un jour peut-être de ceux de l'Europe. » Cette seconde édition de 1779 (EO: 1756) est imprimée par la veuve de Duchesne et est particulièrement rare. (small tear on the title page, rare foxing, fresh overall). Contemporary full marbled glazed calf, smooth spine decorated, brown morocco title, gilt fillet on the edges, marbled edges. (some wear and tear to the binding). Reissue of this rare essay in which Pierre-Louis de Saintard (1718-1766) exposes the consequences of the European presence in North America, when the Seven Years War was about to break out (O.E. : 1756, Amsterdam). Presented in the form of an epistolary novel (letters dated from July to September 1756), the work proposes to find a balance between the different colonial powers in order to avoid conflict while promoting commerce and trade. According to Chadenat, the work is: "Interesting for the origin of the Canadian War ". Pierre-Louis de Saintard, the son of a landowner in Santo Domingo, worked for the East India Company and quickly understood that the divergent interests of European nations in America would lead to confrontation unless a balance of power could be found. He is also the author of: "Essay on the French colonies" (1754) and "Letters of a citizen on the permission to trade in the Colonies" (1756). In 1763, he was a member of the Superior Council of Port-au-Prince and a deputy of this Council at the Colonial Assembly in Cape Town. If commercial and economic interests are not foreign to Saintard's thinking, he is first and foremost a humanist and his primary goal is peace: "Is there at least in any part of our globe a people who agree to live and let others live? As we travelled around the world, we saw Europe filled with weapons and ships, and by a new event in modern history, infested with pirates; Asia, in the midst of peace, subjected to the military sword; Africa, in the most absurd barbarism, busy selling its inhabitants to other continents. America alone remained tranquil after the exhaustion or extinction of its inhabitants, whom the Religion of the Spaniards had destroyed: but its new Citizens are, at last, no longer taking a simple part in the wars of Europe; a contention peculiar to America has risen, the sparks of which, if this incipient fire cannot be quenched, will in time set her continent ablaze; & by accustoming it to principal and personal interests, will one day perhaps separate it from those of Europe. " This second edition of 1779 (OE: 1756) was printed by Duchesne's widow and is particularly rare. Paris, Robertus Stephanus, 1546 + 1547. Folio. Early 17th century full calf binding with six raised bands to spine, gilt title-label and single line-gilding to both spine and boards. Red speckled edges. Leather on boards with abrasions, and spine and corners restored. Loss of the original leather to capitals. First and last leaves with a bit of light brownspotting, but otherwise just the slightest of brownspotting. A very good, clean, well-margined copy. 19th century owner's name (Aubert) to inside of front board, 18th century note to front free end-paper, and Abraham du Prat's (1616-1660) handwritten ex-libirs to the first title-page, above which he has noted R. Estienne's age and year of death. Early armorial and Lyon Public College stamp (19th century) to blank part of first title-page. 538 (recte 542), (2) pp. + 128, (4) pp. Magnificently printed in Greek lettering, in Garamond's Grecs du Roi type, with titles, corrections, and colophons in Latin. Large decorated woodcut ornaments and initials. Title-pages with woodcut snake and olive branch.
The splendid first edition - with a highly interesting provenance - of Dionyssos Halicarnassos' extremely important ""Roman Antiquities"", also known as ""Early Roman History"", which, together with Livy’s, is the most valuable source to our knowledge of early Roman history. It treats of Rome from its origins to the First Punic War, in twenty books, of which only the first 11 remain extant. Dionysius is the first major historian of early Roman history whose work is now extant, and his seminal “Roman Antiquities” is responsible for most of the knowledge that we have of ancient Rome as well as the primary source for the accounts of the Roman foundation myths, including that of Romulus and Remus. The myth spans the first 2 volumes of the work, beginning with Book I chapter 73 and concluding in Book II chapter 56. Most other ancient historians who wrote about early Roman history almost certainly used Dionysius as a source for their material, which can be traced back to the foundational magnum opus “Roman Antiquities”. Though written from a pro-Roman standpoint, the work was very carefully researched. Dionyssos selected carefully among authorities and preserved a wealth of details that would otherwise not have been known to us today. This seminal editio princeps is of the utmost importance for obvious historic reasons, but also plays a significant role in printing history. It is usually referred to as one of the most beautiful Greek books ever printed (beginning with Harwood), and it is with this edition that Robert Estienne’s son Henri, then merely 15 years old “was introduced to the work of his life, by helping his father correct the text. The book, magnificently printed in “grecs du roi”, has been called (by Harwood) one of the most beautiful Greek books ever printed. It is said that Francois I himself selected the work for publication from a manuscript in his library.” (Schreiber). “EDITIO PRINCEPS. “One of the most beautiful books the Greek press ever produced”, says Harwood. Freytag, in his Adpar.litt.t.ii. 1304-13, treats largely of this splendid edition, and of the books it contains (note: Besides the eleven books of Roman antiquities, it contains the first four chapters of “Ars rhetorica, de Genere dicendi Thukydides,” &c). “Typis vereregiis ac nitidissimis” says Fabricius.” (Dibdin). As often, the present copy of the “Roman Antiquities” is bound with Dionyssos’ rhetorical works “De compositione” etc., described as Schreiber as “Beautiful edition of Dionysius’ rhetorical works, which Robert printed, in “grecs du roi,” as a companion volume to the precious item (i.e. “Roman Antiquities”"" the two works are often found together. Provenance: Abraham du Prat (1616-1660) was a famous French physician and prominent member of l'Académie Montmor, a group of scholars who met in Paris to discuss scientific questions.
