‎First monograph of significance about the Greek historian Herodotus. First edition. Peter Wesseling, was from 1735-1764 professor at Utrecht, in the Faculty of Humanities, and from 1746 also a professor in the Faculty of Law. He was in the first place historian. One of his key achievement was the opening up of the work of Herodotus, who - where others focused their look to the mythical history- went deeply into in the human history. Herodotus was actively and methodically searching for the historical "truth." He strove to find the causes of the events; he wanted to explain the facts. Wesseling thus exerted great influence, even internationally, on the modernization of historiography.
