Bound in contemporary half roan , boards covered with marbled paper, smooth gilt spine. Expertly rebacked, a fine copy. On the half-title the author's manuscript ex-dono '' de la part de l'auteur ''. Rare and highly interesting treatise on the history of ship artillery by the inventor of the first naval gun designed to fire explosive shells. (the paixhans gun).. The Napoleontic era saw the development of the shell. The first French trials were made in 1793, in 1797 at Cherbourg they were tried against ship targets. Also the first American steam ships designed by Fulton are mentioned. The United States were one of the first countries to adopt the Paixhans design which was to be superseded in 1849 by the Dahlgren gun. The book belonged to the library of Louis Raymond de Montainac. There is however no proof of this provenance in the book. Ce livre faisait partie de la bibliothèque de Louis Raymond de Montaignac de Chauvance. Mais c'est une provenance non attestée.
