London The British Library 1984 4to (28.5 cm), front. printed in color, XII, 407 pp. Publisher's brown cloth & slipcase. T.J. Cobden-Sanderson (1840-1922) was an energetic organizer and effective publicist of the Arts and Craft Movement, whose name he invented. Of all the arts and crafts, he was most interested and active in those connected with his vision of the Book Beautiful: calligraphy, typography and bookbinding. His first binding (hailed by G. D. Hobson the first modern binding) he finished on 21 July 1884. To mark 100 anniversary the British Library published Cobden-Sanderson' Time Book in which he recorded the details of his bindings made from 1884 to 1893 before he opened Doves Bindery. Of the total of 169 bindings over half have been found, examined and photographed. The catalogue is preceded by biographical introduction. In appendixes included Cobden-Sanderson designs not related to bindings, a list of his tools and tools designs, a list of major exhibitions of Cobden-Sanderson bindings.
