Fine woodengravings in the text.‎


‎First edition of this famous first-hand description of the North-American Indians. The author, a Canadian painter, traversed, almost alone, the teritories of the Red River Settlement, the Valley of Saskatchewan across the Rocky Mountains, down the Columbia River the shores of Puget Sound, and Vancouver's Island. It is an interesting collection of the incidents of life and travel, among the Indian tribes inhabiting the Regions over which he passed. - Sabin 37007.‎

‎Illustré d'un portrait de l'auteur en frontispice. Récit d'une captivité chez les Indiens Osage dans le Kansas, ainsi que le voyage de Hunter à travers les montagnes jusqu'à la rivière Columbia. Durant de nombreuses années, ce récit a été accusé d'être une fiction, mais Richard Drinnon, en 1972, écrit "White Savage: The case of John Dunn Hunter" où il constitue un solide dossier pour prouver l'authenticité du récit. On trouve également de nombreuses indications sur la médecine pratiquées par les Indiens. ‎
