Leather tome- and title-labels to all volumes. Edges of boards gilt. Light wear to extremities primarily affecting head and foot of spines, corners bumped. Internally with light occassional, marginal brownspotting, but generally fine. With ""J. Collin"" (Danish zoologist Jonas Collin) to top margin of most front free end-papers. Nissen and Heilbrun differ in the listing of number of plates and misname the descriptions of the plates.
First edition of this extensive landmark work in natural science. Together with Diderot's Encyclopaedia, this work represents the peak of book printing of the French enlightenment. Buffon was the first to sum up an entire natural history, based on science instead of theology"" It constitutes one of the first attempts to provide a comprehensive account of the natural world aiming at describing the entire known natural world - including plants, animals, and minerals - in a single work. Buffon based his work on first-hand observations and scientific analysis, rather than on second-hand accounts or mythological beliefs, making it a seminal work in the development of modern science. ""Buffon's ""Natural History, General and Particular"" presented for the first time a complete survey of natural history in a popular form [...] he was the first to present the universe as one complete whole and to find no phenomenon calling for any but a purely scientific explanation. In 1739, he was appointed Director of the Jardin du Roi (now Jardin des Plantes). It would appear that the 'Natural History germinated in the preparation of a catalogue of the royal collection. Buffon then enlarged its scope to Aristotelian or Plinian proportions and finally transformed it into a conspectus of nature of a breadth and depth previously unknown"". Buffon's work had a significant impact upon the field of natural history and influenced many other scientists, including Charles Darwin"" In a part of the work, (""Des Epoqeus de la Nature"" (Supplement vol. V, 1778, present here)), Buffon attacked several Christian doctrines on natural science. He saw man as a part of the animal world, he objected to earth being only 6000 years old, and he dismissed a rigid classification system thus paving the way for Darwin's thoughts a century later:""Georges Buffon set forth his general views on species classification in the first volume of his Histoire Naturelle. Buffon objected to the so-called ""artificial"" classifications of Andrea Cesalpino and Carolus Linnaeus, stating that in nature the chain of life has small gradations from one type to another and that the discontinuous categories are all artificially constructed by mankind. Buffon suggested that all organic species may have descended form a small number of primordial types"" this is an evolution predominantly from more perfect to less perfect forms."" (Parkinson, Breakthroughs). ""Buffon's work is of exceptional importance because of its diversity, richness, originality, and influence. Buffon was among the first to create an autonomous science, free of any theological influence. He emphasized the importance of natural history and the great length of geological time. He envisioned the nature of science and understood the roles of paleontology, zoological geography, and animal psychology. He realised both the necessity of transformism and its difficulties. Although his cosmogony was inadequate and his theory of animal reproduction was weak, and although he did not understand the problem of classification, he did establish the intellectual framework within which most naturalists up to Darwin worked."" Complet des 4 plans et de "la table chronologique des Mexicains".Cette histoire de l'Amérique est sans doute l'ouvrage le plus connu de cet historien écossais. Elle fut publiée pour la première fois entre 1777 et 1780. Au paravent son Histoire de l'Ecosse (1759) lui avait valu la reconnaissance et un poste à l'université d'Edimbourg. Il publia à la suite, en 1769, une Histoire du règne de Charles-Quint considérée comme d'une grande impartialité et précision.L'histoire de l'Amérique retrace, en huit livres, les premiers essais maritimes pour les voyages lointains, la biographie de C. Colomb, les premières conquêtes et installations espagnoles, l'état de l'Amérique au moment de sa découverte, le rôle de Cortès, la conquête du Pérou par Pizzare ; il décrit encore les possessions espagnoles du Mexique, du Pérou, du Honduras, du Chili... A la fin il dresse le tableau de la politique et du commerce des Espagnols. Il est très critique sur l'effet de leur installation sur les populations et l'exploitation des richesses. La première édition française a parue en 2 vol. in-4 en 1778 traduite par M. Suard et Morelet. Ce dernier traduisit aussi les livres 8 et 9 qui complètent cette histoire de l'Amérique, parus séparément en 1788.

Edition originale. "Abrégée et modifiée par MM. Émile Ruelle (...) et Alphonse Huillard Bréholles". L'ouvrage fut accueilli avec enthousiasme par ses contemporains: "Emile Ruelle, professeur au collège Henri IV, et Alphonse Bréolles, membre de l'Institut Historique, ont complété l'histoire des temps anciens et de la Grèce, qui parut à Londres en 1786, sons le nom de Gillies, traduit, corrigé, émondé l'oeuvre de cet historien anglais, et publié 'Une histoire résumée des temps anciens, comprenant histoire de la Grèce'. Ce travail se recommande par le choix judicieux des matériaux, par l'exactitude scrupuleuse des détails, par la sagacité des aperçus ()" (Journal de l'institut, XIII, 431).Très bon exemplaire, très frais, bien relié dans une jolie reliure romantique.

Histoire de la maison de Stuart sur le trône d'Angleterre.
Londres [Paris], s. n., 1763 ; 6 vol. in-12. Basane marbrée, dos à nerfs ornés, pièces de titre et de tomaison fauves. Manque à la coiffe sup. du tome 3, quelques coins émoussés, 2 feuillest déboîtés aux tomes 1, 2 et 4. Initiales ex-libris inscrites au pochoirs en pied des titres : "LPDH." , et ex-libris manuscrit en tête des pages 1 : "Mde de Laroche de Dreuille". Il s'agit sans doute de Catherine Gabrielle de La Roche, fille de Philippede La Roche, seigneur de La Roche des Fontaines, La Lande, Sauzaye... et de Marie Eléonor Louan de Coursais ; elle avait épousé François Senetaire comte de Dreuille, morte en 1869, veuve et sans postérité. La seigneurie et le château de Dreuille se situent sur la commune de Cressanges (Allier).
Le célèbre philosophe écossais David Hume avait commencé la publication de sa grande "Histoire d'ngleterre" en 1754 par la partie consacrée au reigne des Stuart (de Jacques Ier, 1603, jusqu'à la déposition de Jacques II d'Angleterre en 1688). La publication se poursuivra jusqu'en 1777. Dès 1760 l'Abbé Prévost d'Exile donnera la tradcution de l'Histoire de la Maison de Stuart, mais son décès l'empêchera de poursuivre ce travail, qui sera confié à Mme Belot (née Octavie Guichard) dont les traductions des parties consacrées aux Tudor puis aux Plantagenêt (depuis l'expédition de Jules-César jusqu'à l'époque des Tudor), paraîtront respectivement en 1763 et 1765. La première édition de la traduction de l'Abbé Prévost est donc paru en 1760 en 3 volumes in-4. Une deuxième édition avait été donnée en 1761 en six volumes in-12. La traduction française de l'Histoire d'Angleterre" forme un ensemble de 18 volumes in-12.
