‎L'histoire du sous-marin dans la marine française commence sous le Consulat lorsque le célèbre ingénieur Fulton construit son “Nautilus” à Paris. Puis il y eut le “Plongeur” de Bourgeois et Brun, et le “Goubet”, le micro sous-marin qui venait de Russie. En 1886, le “Gymnote” est le premier sous-marin dans le monde qui navigue convenablement en plongée. C'est ensuite en 1899, la révolution du submersible avec le “Narval” de Laubeuf qui se prolonge jusqu'à une nouvelle révolution, celle du sous-marin nucléaire en 1954. L'année 1969 voit les essais du “Redoutable”, premier sous-marin français lanceur de missiles à propulsion nucléaire... ‎
