"Il se dégage du livre de ces deux historiens anglais, un Nelson que l'on devinait à peine, un nouveau Nelson bien plus humain que l'autre et partant, bien plus émouvant. Le héros anglais, loin d'être un homme heureux, traîna, presque toute sa vie, une existence douloureuse, soumise sans cesse à quelque pouvoir féminin. Déjà lorsqu'il n'avait que vingt ans, il s'en était fallu de peu qu'il désertât son navire pour les beaux yeux d'une jeune Américaine. Les années avaient passé, et les femmes. Il s'était marié et croyait enfin tenir le calme et le bonheur quand il rencontra celle qui devait être la grande passion de sa vie. Et comment aurait-il résisté aux charmes de cette Emma Hamilton, au trouble passé, mais que les chaudes toiles de Romney nous montrent si jolie ? Il venait de se couvrir de gloire à Aboukir. L'Italie le fêtait en libérateur... Le héros se laissa enchaîner. Et dès lors, aussi étrange que cela paraisse, c'est Emma et elle seule qui explique la conduite de Nelson, homme de guerre. La société londonienne refusa de recevoir l'ancienne déesse du Temple de l'Hymen. Les multiples affronts que subissait quotidiennement le pauvre Nelson déterminèrent son attitude à Copenhague et à Trafalgar. A Copenhague, tandis que les boulets danois labouraient le pont de l'Elephant, il déclarait qu'il n'eût pas voulu « être ailleurs pour un million ». A Trafalgar, il tint à entrer le premier dans la mêlée. Plein d'amertume, et pourtant incapable de s'arracher à l'emprise d'Emma Hamilton, il cherchait visiblement la mort. Il la trouva, et la victoire que son intrépidité lui avait value par surcroît. (...) MM George Edinger et E.-J.-C. Neep, faisant la première place à la vie privée de Nelson, ont relégué au second plan ses exploits maritimes. Même ils les ont, à notre avis, un peu trop amoindris. S'ils déclarent justement que ce fut le capitaine Foley, commandant le navire de tête à Aboukir, qui eut l'idée de passer entre la terre et la ligne, des vaisseaux français, entraînant dans son sillage toute l'avant-garde britannique, ils auraient dû, pour être justes, souligner que Nelson, en conduisant le reste de son escadre entre l'ennemi et la haute mer, sut admirablement mettre à profit l'initiative heureuse de son subordonné. Par cette manœuvre, décidée sur-le-champ, la moitié de notre malheureuse flotte se trouva prise comme dans un étau de feu. Ainsi, la présence d'esprit de Nelson décida de la victoire..."
