Paris, [Cahiers d'Art], 1942. Un volume in-8 (220 x 170 mm) broché, 28 pages, couverture blanche rempliée imprimée. Édition originale d'une extrême rareté. Le tirage de cet ouvrage , destiné aux amis de l'auteur et de l'illustrateur a été limité à 65 exemplaires (12 sur papier ancien et 53 sur vélin d'Arches), tous numérotés. Celui-ci n°20 sur Arches signé par l'auteur et l'artiste. 1 EAU-FORTE ORIGINALE DE HENRI LAURENS EN FRONTISPICE. : LA GRAVURE EN 4 ÉTATS : NOIR, BLEU, ORANGE ET ROUGE. Non mis dans le commerce, l'ouvrage a été édité clandestinement sous l'Occupation aux Cahiers d'Art par Christian Zervos. La plupart des 65 exemplaires ne comportent qu'un état en noir de la gravure. Printed for the friends of the artist and author, n° 20/65 signed by Laurens and Eluard, this with the etching printed in 4 states in black, in blue, orange and brown. Provenance from the private library of a famous and important american Art Historian. NOTE: Henri Laurens (1885-1954). The French artist Henri Laurens was born in Paris. In 1905 he completed a mason apprenticeship and worked as a building mason. In his spare time he created sculptures that were stylistically influenced by Auguste Rodin. In 1911 he met Georges Braque who gave him an understanding of cubism. In 1913, Henri Laurens exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. From 1927 on Laurens began to model his sculptures, mostly female nudes, with organic-voluminous forms instead of the geometrical forms of cubism. Henri Laurens works can be seen in many international museums such as the National Gallery, Berlin, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Premier tirage des bois de Henri Laurens. Cette édition contient uniquement les Chants V et VI de L'Odyssée, dans la traduction de Victor Bérard. Tirage à 175 exemplaires. Celui-ci l'un des 125 exemplaires numérotés sur vergé de Montval, signé par l'artiste au colophon (n° 144). Une très belle réalisation, d'une grande pureté. Très bel exemplaire. (MONOD, 6079) Parfait

Henri Laurens (* 18. Februar 1885 in Paris; 5. Mai 1954 ebenda) war ein franz sischer Bildhauer und Zeichner des Kubismus. Laurens absolvierte von 1899 bis 1905 zun chst eine Steinmetzlehre und widmete sich der ornamentalen Bildhauerarbeit am Bau. In seiner Freizeit fertigte er Plastiken im Stil Auguste Rodins an. 1911 schloss er sich der Gruppe der K nstler des Montparnasse an und wurde bis 1912 durch Georges Braque, mit dem er zeitlebens befreundet war, in den synthetischen Kubismus eingef hrt. 1913 partizipierte er zum ersten Mal am Salon des Ind pendants in Paris und lernte drei Jahre sp ter Juan Gris, Amedeo Modigliani und Pablo Picasso kennen, woraufhin bis 1919 Stilleben und K pfe aus ausgeschnittenen, schr g ineinandergef gten, bemalten Ebenen aus Holz und Metall"[1], zum Teil im Stil afrikanischer Stammesmasken, entstanden. Zwischen 1920 und 1930 schuf Laurens in Anlehnung an Picassos kubistische Gem lde post-kubistische Werke, die nicht mehr konstruiert, sondern modelliert sind. Ab 1930 verloren die Figuren ihren kubistischen Aufbau und gewannen unter dem Einfluss des Surrealismus eine gerundet-volumin se K rperlichkeit." Nach einem Aufenthalt am Meer im Jahre 1934 wandelte sich sein Thema hin zu amphibischen Sirenen und anderen sinnlichen Meerjungfrauen oder Musen. Ein Hauptwerk aus dieser Zeit ist die im Jahre 1952 fertiggestellte L'Amphion vor der Universit t von Caracas in Venezuela, eine auf (inklusive Sockel) 4,40 Meter H he vergr erte Version der L'Amphion von 1937. Der griechischen Sage nach f gten sich beim Mauerbau von Theben die Steine allein durch den Klang von Amphions Lyra zusammen. Diese Arbeit ist nach Laurens' eigenen Worten der Versuch einer Synthese von Musik und Architektur".In der Bronze Le matin (Der Morgen) von 1944 verarbeitete Laurens das mit der Okkupation durch die Deutschen verbundene erdr ckende Leid. So mussten viele seiner Freunde Paris verlassen und kehrten zum Teil nie wieder zur ck. Henri Laurens starb im Jahr 1954 im Alter von 69 Jahren in seiner Heimatstadt.
