Publié à l'occasion de l'exposition intitulée "Photographie et surréalisme." - Dates d'exposition: 15 avril - 15 juin 1985, Musée national d'art moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris). Les trois auteurs : Rosalind Krauss, Jane Livingston, Dawn Ades. Ce livre "montre comment quelques pionniers mirent au service de la subjectivité surréaliste la faculté de constat de cet oeil qu'est l'objectif photographique. Ce livre récuse aussi l'idée reçue qui veut qu'une photographie surréaliste soit nécessairement une image truquée. Les surréalistes, ont, au contraire, largement exploité la photographie-vérité pour illustrer leurs textes littéraires pour illustrer leurs textes littéraires ou théoriques (…)".
