Edition originale (l'ouvrage fut souvent réédité).L'ingénieur José Ortiz Echagüé (1886-1980) avait découvert la photographie dès l'âge de 12 ans, lorsqu'il reçut son premier appareil. Aussi, indépendamment de ses activités professionnelles dans l'aéronautique, commença t-il, entre 1909 et 1916, un travail de documentation photographique, qu'il continua par la suite au Maroc espagnol, puis en Espagne même. Son travail portait aussi bien sur les paysages et les monuments que sur les êtres humains et leurs rituels.
