Accompanies an exhibition dedicated to Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680), a leading artist of Restoration England and Principal Painter to Charles II. Before turning to portraiture (the style eagerly commissioned by his aristocratic patrons) Lely's ambition was to be a painter of narrative scenes. He produced massive works characterised by strong lighting and idealised landscape settings, likely influenced by the pictures of Van Dyck and the Venetian Renaissance, which were available for him to study at the houses of his patrons.
