‎In "Droombeelden uit het Verre Oosten" verhaalt Chantal Kozyreff de boeiende geschiedenis van de Japanse Toren en het Chinese Paviljoen te Laken, die beide een belangrijke plaats bekleden in het historisch architecturaal patrimonium van Belgi . Deze recent gerestaureerde bouwwerken bieden thans, na jarenlange sluiting, een schitterend kader voor tijdelijke tentoonstellingen en zullen binnenkort het Museum voor Japanse kunst herbergen. Ze behoren tot de meest intrigerende constructies ooit gebouwd in opdracht van Leopold II. Alles lijkt al gezegd en geschreven over de Belgische koning Leopold II (1835?1909), over zijn persoonlijkheid, zijn veelvuldige initiatieven, zijn ingrijpende politieke invloed, kortom, over zijn lange en tegelijk vruchtbare regeerperiode voor Belgi . Toch kan de koning-bouwer, deze urbanist en ecoloog avant la lettre, nog steeds op de belangstelling van de wetenschappelijke onderzoekers rekenen. Vreemd genoeg besteden de studies over zijn bouwondernemingen echter weinig aandacht aan de Japanse Toren en aan het Chinese Paviljoen te Laken (Brussel), hoewel beide bouwwerken gerekend worden tot de grote verwezenlijkingen die Leopold II aan het einde van zijn regeerperiode tot stand bracht of begunstigde. Toch heeft het bevreemdende karakter van deze bouwwerken ook steeds heel wat vragen opgeroepen. De al dan niet correcte antwoorden erop vormden een rijke voedingsbodem voor fabels en verzinsels. Het doel van deze rijk ge llustreerde studie is dan ook om dit onderwerp te herbekijken in het licht van de huidige kennis. Hiervoor wordt gebruikgemaakt van minder bekend archiefmateriaal, naast nog onontgonnen of zelfs onuitgegeven materiaal. Om deze zonderlinge bouwwerken in het Brusselse landschap beter te begrijpen, plaatst "Droombeelden uit het Verre Oosten" hun ontstaan vooreerst in de ruimere economische en culturele context. Nadien schetst de auteur de geschiedenis van hun bouw en van de talrijke tegenslagen die de werken teisterden, om zo bij hun uiteindelijke bestemming te belanden. With this paper he opened the field of high-velocity aeromechanics. The method devised by Chaplygin made it possible to solve the problem of the flow of a gas stream if, under the limiting conditions, the solution to the corresponding problem of an incompressible liquid is known. The equations derived by Chaplygin for the motion of a compressible fluid are valid for the case in which the velocity of the current never exceeds the speed of sound. He applied this theory to the solution of two problems concerning the stream flow of a compressible fluid : escape from a vessel and flow around a plate that is perpendicular to the direction of flow at infinity... O gazovykh struyakh was Chaplygin's doctoral dissertation. At the time it did not receive wide recognition... The significance of this paper for solving problems in aviation came to light at the beginning of the 1930's, when it became necessary to create a new science about the motion of bodies at velocities equal to and greater than the speed of sound, and for the flow patterns past them.
