Schilder, etser en fotograaf Jozef Van Ruyssevelt (1941- 1985) heeft in een korte tijdspanne een rijk en intens oeuvre tot stand gebracht, dat nog veel te weinig bekend is. Hij was een meester in het gebruik van kleur en clair-obscur, en zijn alledaagse omgeving vormde voor hem een niet-aflatende bron van inspiratie - meubels, gebruiksvoorwerpen, planten, muren, ramen, gebladerte, graspartijen, het omliggende platteland. In zijn stijl vallen de abrupte overgangen op die ook karakteristiek waren voor zijn nu eens ge xalteerde, dan weer neerslachtige persoonlijkheid. Dit boek presenteert een groot aantal essenti le werken, waarvan er vele nooit eerder zijn gereproduceerd, aangevuld met nog ongepubliceerde foto's uit het archief van de kunstenaar. Bij het beeldende werk bevinden zich verschillende gouaches die worden bezocht door de geesten van Turner, Constable, Van Gogh, Hopper, Twombly of Rothko. Maar een geest is geen invloed. Van Ruyssevelt putte niet rechtstreeks uit hun schilderijen en zou dat ook niet hebben willen doen. De werken in kwestie duiden op een mysterieus, geheim pact tussen schilders en de Schilderkunst: 'bezocht worden', dat is in dit boek de andere betekenis van 'bezoek'. ***// In the space of a relatively short career, the painter, etcher and photographer Jozef Van Ruyssevelt (1941?1985) created a rich and intense body of work that is still far too little known. He excelled in his use of colour and chiaroscuro, his everyday surroundings providing an inexhaustible source of inspiration for him: furniture, utensils, plants, walls, windows, foliage, grass and the countryside beyond. Van Ruyssevelt?s style is marked by the same abrupt transitions that typified his sometimes exuberant, sometimes despondent personality. This book presents a large number of essential works, many not previously reproduced, supplemented by photographs from the artist?s personal archive that are likewise published here for the first time. His visual work includes a variety of gouaches visited by the ghosts of Turner, Constable, Van Gogh, Hopper, Twombly and Rothko. All the same, a ghost is not an influence: Van Ruyssevelt did not draw on their paintings directly, nor would he have wished to. The works in question hint at a mysterious, secret pact between painters and the Art of Painting. In this sense, the ?visit? in the book?s title is also a visitation?

Edward Lipski (British, b. 1966) is an artist and sculptor known for successfully expressing uncomfortable places in the human psyche through super-real mannequins as well as cartoonlike figures. His work often has a certain unsettling playfulness to it, distinguishing his particular approach to the grotesque. Lipski has said of his art: ?My sculptures are mistakes in the same way language itself is kind of a mistake? language is an approximation, an attempt to describe the world, but an attempt that is doomed to fail." By combining his conceptual thought process with this pre-linguistic means of conveying imagery, Lipski's work stands apart from the current generation of young British artists.
