The Basilica of Sv. Marija Velika near Bale is, along with the early medieval Cathedral in Novi-grad, one of the most important Carolingian monuments in Istria. It is a part of a monastery complex, the remnants of which are still being excavated and researched. The church mani-fests traditional architectural forms: the origin of the three-aisled basilica with three-apsidal sanctuary with polygonal apses can be traced back to the time of Emperor Justinian, and the typology of capitals follows the famous 6th century examples from the basilica of Eufrasius in Porec, representing a variant of the type used in Constantinople and Ravenna. The hand of the stone-mason, ? The Master of Bale capitals? , was recognized also at some other Carol-ingian sites in Istria, and the products of his workshop were recognized as the first coherent pre-Romanesque sculptural opus in Istria, dated to the last quarter of the 8th century, to the time of important missionary activities in the areas under Carolingian rule. Languages : French.

The present volume catalogues and illustrates all the stained glass produced before 1700 in the collections of Upstate New York. It includes the glass in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, in the Hyde Collection at Glen Falls, in Ithaca College, and predominantly in Corning, where the Corning Glass Museum is well known for its exceptional collection and where also Christ Episcopal Church houses two interesting fifteenth-century windows. The catalogue covers a wide range of panels of French and English glass from the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and the collections are particularly strong in their holdings of later heraldic panels from the Lowlands and Switzerland. In addition to a detailed examination of the glass, Professor Lillich presents exhaustively researched histories of the individual panels, and sheds much light on the formation of the different collections and the personalities who created them. Every work catalogued is also illustrated, accompanied by clearly presented restoration charts and many comparative illustrations. Languages : English.

The dal Pozzo print collection was unique in its scope and organisation. Some 3,000 prints are known, in fourteen albums and many loose impressions mainly divided between the British Library and the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. Acquired from the flourishing printmaking industry of the time, the prints assembled by Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588?1657) and his younger brother Carlo Antonio (1606?89) were largely documentary and carefully ordered by subject matter: costumes, religious processions and ceremonies, tombs and catafalques, portraits, social and humorous subjects, architecture, topography, maps and military engagements. This second and final part of the catalogue presents the architectural, topographical and military prints. Over 750 prints are devoted to ancient and modern Rome: from an album entirely dedicated to St Peter?s ? the largest building project of the day ? to another covering the major pilgrim and other churches in Rome, including exterior views, plans, altarpieces and statuary. The palaces and villas of Rome are also well represented, including Falda?s famous Palazzi di Roma, while the ancient city is evoked through two compilations of sixteenth-century prints: Hieronymous Cock?s Roman ruins and the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae with many reconstructions of ancient buildings. The collection stretched well beyond Rome however, and included architecture in other Italian and European cities (including Rubens?s Palazzi di Genova and Perret?s engravings of the Escorial). The European theatre of war is represented in over 600 prints recording major sixteenth- and seventeenth-century military engagements: an extraordinary assemblage that testifies to the popularity of this genre of printmaking that not only celebrated victory but provided information to convey news of military events. This ground-breaking catalogue will be an essential resource not only for students of prints, but for all those studying European visual culture in the seventeenth century.
