‎Women in Educational Policy-making. A Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of the Situation in the E.U.‎

‎Leuven, Universitaire Pers, 1999 Paperback, English, original editor's jacket, 16x24 cm., 148 pp. ISBN 9789061869528.‎

‎ Studia Paedagogica : 24. Enhancing the participation of women in high-level decision-making in several sectors of society has been on the agenda of national and international institutions for several years. These endeavours, however, are not always equally successful. In this book, the authors evaluate the participation of women in the field of educational policy-making in western Europe, both from a quantitative and a qualitative perspective. Over the last decennia, many countries have taken legal steps in order to eliminate structural obstacles to women's access to high level positions; nevertheless, women still take up only a small minority of these functions, which suggests that cultural factors are obstructing women's empowerment as much as juridical factors. Increasing the numbers of women as a purely quantitative approach to the problem is inadequate, because it leaves these cultural elements unchallenged. Therefore, in the first, theoretical part of this book, the authors address the question of the relationship between women's participation in politics and the question of social emancipation. Through a deconstruction of the different arguments for increasing women's participation in policy-making, the authors try to indicate in what sense or under what conditions women's participation in politics can address not only the problem of women's equal rights, but also that of engendering a less discriminative, more democratic and emancipatory politics. In the second part, they analyse on an empirical level the participation of women in educational policy-making in the member countries of the E.U. The aim thereby is to explore some general tendencies and to formulate hypotheses concerning interrelationships between some of the data. This part gives rise to a number of interesting questions for further research. ‎

‎Women Artists in Early Modern Italy Careers, Fame, and Collectors‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller 2016, 2016 Hardcover, . iv + 181 pages., 22 b/w ills, 51 col. ills, 220 x 280 mm, English, FINE ISBN 9781909400351.‎

‎Enhancing our understanding of early Italian female painters including Sofonisba Anguissola and introducing new ones such as Costanza Francini and Lucrezia Quistelli, this volume studies women artists, their patrons, and their collectors, in order to trace the rise of the social phenomenon of the woman artist. In ten chapters spanning two centuries, this collection of essays examines the relationships between women artists and their publics, both in early modern Italy as well as across Europe. Drawing upon archival evidence, these essays afford abundant documentary evidence about the diverse strategies that women utilized in order to carry out artistic careers, from Sofonisba Anguissola's role as a lady-in-waiting at the court of Philip II of Spain, to Lucrezia Quistelli's avoidance of the Florentine market in favor of upholding the prestige of her family, to Costanza Francini's preference for the steady but humble work of candle painting for a Florentine confraternity. Their unusual life stories along with their outstanding talents brought fame to a number of women artists even in their own lifetimes ? so much fame, in fact, that Giorgio Vasari included several women artists in his 1568 edition of artists' biographies. Notably, this visibility also subjected women artists to moral scrutiny, with consequences for their patronage opportunities. Because of their fame and their extraordinary (and often exemplary) lives, works made by women artists held a special allure for early generations of Italian collectors, including Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici, who made a point of collecting women?s self-portraits. In the eighteenth century, British collectors wishing to model themselves after the Italian virtuosi exhibited an undeniable penchant for the Italian women artists of a bygone era, even though they largely ignored the contemporary women artists in their midst. Sheila Barker (Ph.D., Columbia University, 2002), directs the Jane Fortune Research Program on Women Artists at the Medici Archive Project, the first archival program of its kind. Her publications of documentation on women artists have shed light on Lucrezia Quistelli, Artemisia Gentileschi, Irene Parenti Duclos, and the phenomenon of female copyists.‎

‎Women in Arts, Architecture and Literature: Heritage, Legacy and Digital Perspectives Proceedings of the First Annual International Women in the Arts Conference.‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2023 Hardback, Pages: 380 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm,Illustrations:11 b/w, 82 col. Language(s):English, Italian, Spanish. ISBN 9782503606828.‎

‎In the last few decades, the study of women in the arts has largely increased in terms of scholars involved in research and investigation, with the reception of the outcomes especially acknowledged by museums which are dedicating part of their mission to organizing exhibitions and/or acquiring the works of women. The Annual International Women in Arts Conference seeks to advance contemporary discussions on how female creativity has helped shape European culture in its heterogeneity since the Middle Ages. This volume collects the proceedings of the first conference organised in Rome, in October 2021. It focuses on the role of women in literature, art,?and architecture. Throughout history, these domains were often seen as very masculine. Yet, there have been many women who have made their mark as writers, illuminators, artists and architects, or have played a decisive role as patrons and supporters in these arts. This collection of essays aims to bring these women to the fore and sheds a new light on the heritage and legacy of women in the creative arts and architecture from the Middle Ages until the 20th century.‎

‎Medieval Holy Women in the Christian Tradition c.1100-c.1500 9782503531809‎

‎, Brepols Publishers, 2010 hardcover XI 748 p., 3 b/w ill., 7 b/w line art, 156 x 234 mm Languages: English, Latin, French . ISBN 9782503531809.‎

‎ The first comprehensive survey of the major - but much neglected - contribution made by holy women to the religious culture of the later Middle Ages. Medieval Holy Women in the Christian Tradition offers the first wide-ranging study of the remarkable women who contributed to the efflorescence of female piety and visionary experience in Europe between 1100 and 1500. This volume offers essays by prominent scholars in the field which extend the boundaries of our previous knowledge and understanding of medieval holy women. While some essays provide new perspectives on the familiar names of the unofficial canon of mulieres sanctae, many others bring into the spotlight women less familiar now, but influential in their own time and richly deserving of scholarly attention. The five general essays establish a context for understanding the issues affecting female religious witness in the later Middle Ages. The geographical arrangement of the volume allows the reader to develop an awareness of the particular cultural and religious forces in seven different regions and to recognize how these influenced the writing and reception of the holy women of that area. Seventeen major figures have essays devoted exclusively to each of them; in addition, the survey chapters on each region introduce the reader to many more. The extensive bibliographies which follow each chapter encourage further reading and study. Alastair Minnis was Director of the Centre for Medieval Studies and Head of the Department of English at the University of York, and is currently Douglas Tracy Smith Professor of English at Yale University. A Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America and of the English Association, he is the author of six monographs and the editor or co-editor of fifteen further volumes. Rosalynn Voaden (D.Phil., University of York, UK) is the author of God?s Words, Women?s Voices: The Discernment of Spirits in the Writing of Late-Medieval Women Visionaries, and is the editor or co-editor of several volumes in the field. She was a Research Fellow at St Anne?s College, Oxford, and is currently Associate Professor of English at Arizona State University. ‎

‎Voice of Silence Women's Literacy in a Men's Church,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Hardback, XIV+224 p., 5 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503514888.‎

‎This book aims to collect and present the results of research done within the context of the project 'The voice of silence / La voz del silencio: An interdisciplinary research project about literate women and women authors in the West-European late Middle Ages (11th to 15th centuries) from a gender perspective'. The project was a bilateral research project, with participants of the University of Santiago de Chile on the one hand and Universiteit Gent on the other. Medieval scholars, literary historians, cultural historians and literary theorists joined forces. The angle from which the material was being studied, however, was always the same: gender being the central issue. The project focused on women as participants in late medieval society and culture. Indeed, all the researchers involved acquired their expertise in the field of 'medieval society and culture' and/or the field of women's literacy. Several members of this Flemish-Chilean project have contributed an essay to the proposed book, but supplemented by guest contributions. The guests are internationally renowned scholars reflecting an expertise in gender studies or in an aspect not covered by the team members of the project. Thus, the book contains essays by Anglo-American medieval scholars and researchers specialised in Dutch medieval mysticism. Their contributions complete the research results of the project, especially within the art of criticism. The story told in this book is focused on literate women and gender. In the course of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the voices of women authors, many of them religious and mystics, resounded again in a literate society dominated by clerics. Two of the most famous representatives of this 'female voice' are highlighted in Part I. These women were the forerunners of a new reading culture among (semi-)religious and even lay women in which the use of the vernacular was a decisive factor (Part II). Yet, from the thirteenth century onwards, and with increasing intensity towards the end of the Middle Ages, men once more tried to get a grip on (religious) women's reading and writing. Aspects of these attemps are illustrated in part III. Languages : English.‎

‎Women : Photographs of the top female bodybuilders‎

‎New York, United States, Artisan, 1994 Hardcover, 128 pages, ENG, 285 x 240 x 17 mm, dustjacket, one corner has a little ditch, further as good as new, photographs in colour / b/w. ISBN 9781885183019.‎

‎For thousands of years, the muscular male body has been an object of admiration and a primary subject of art. Women, on the other hand, have rarely been celebrated for their physical strength or muscular development. But in the late 1970s, women discovered the sport of competitive bodybuilding and began doing the same kind of muscle-specific weight training as their male counterparts. As a result, we are seeing the emergence of a cultural phenomenon without precedent--women attempting to develop the ultimate degree of muscle size, shape, definition and proportion primarily for aesthetic, rather than athletic, purposes. The fact that many women are now both willing and able to devote themselves to creating muscular bodies is one indication of our changing perception of the potential of the female body as we begin the 21st century. In The Women, author and photographer Bill Dobbins presents eighty full-color and duotone photographs of top female competitive bodybuilders in a stunning visual exploration of this new phenomenon, and convincingly shows that muscles on women can indeed be beautiful. The photographs, combined with an enlightening text, explore the implications of this new aesthetic for art, sport, and our overall view of the capabilities of women. An unusual and fascinating book for anyone interested in fitness, feminism, photography, or the complex issue of gender, The Women is certain to challenge many perceptions.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Hardback, X+384 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503511658.‎

‎This volume explores the reciprocal relationships that can develop between medieval women writers and the modern scholars who study them. Taking up the call to 'research the researcher', the authors indicate not only what they bring to their study from their own personal experience, but how their methodologies and ways of thinking about and dealing with the past have been influenced by the medieval women they study. Medieval women writers discussed include those writing in the vernacular such as Christine de Pizan and Margaret Paston, those writing in Latin such as Hildegard of Bingen, Heloise, and Birgitta of Sweden, and the works transcribed from women mystics such as Margery Kempe, Hadewijch, and Julian of Norwich. Attention is also given to medieval women as the readers, consumers and patrons of written works. Issues considered in this volume include the place of ethics, interestedness and social justice in contemporary medieval studies, questions of alterity, empathy, essentialism and appropriation in dealing with figures of the medieval past, the permeable boundaries between academic medieval studies and popular medievalism, questions of situatedness and academic voice, and the relationship between feminism and medieval studies. Linked to these issues is the interrelation between medieval women and medieval men in the production and consumption of written works both for and about women and the implications of this for both female and male readers of those works today. Overarching all these questions is that of the intellectual and methodological heritage - sometimes ambiguous, perhaps even problematic - that medieval women continue to offer us. ‎Scotland's Royal Women and European Literary Culture, 1424-1587‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 448 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:9 b/w, 37 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503600291.‎

‎Summary Scotland's Royal Women and European Literary Culture, 1424-1587 seeks to fill a significant gap in the rich and ever-growing body of scholarly work on royal and aristocratic women's literary culture in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. There has, to date, been no book-length study of the literary activities of the female members of any one family across time and little study of Scotland's royal women in comparison to their European and English counterparts. This book adopts the missing diachronic perspective and examines the wives and daughters of Scotland's Stewart dynasty and their many and various associations with contemporary Scottish, English, and European literary culture over a period of just over 150 years. It also adopts a timely cross-border and cross-period perspective by taking a trans-national approach to the study of literary history and examining a range of texts and individuals from across the traditional medieval/early modern divide. In exploring the inter-related lives and letters of the women who married into the Scottish royal family from England and Europe ? and those daughters who married outwith Scotland into Europe's royal families ? the resultant study consistently looks beyond Scotland's land and sea borders. In so doing, it moves Scottish literary culture from the periphery to the centre of Europe and demonstrates the constitutive role that Scotland's royal women played in an essentially shared literary and artistic culture. ‎Medieval Mausoleums, Monuments, and Manuscripts. French Royal Women?s Patronage from the Twelfth to the Fourteenth Centuries‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 200 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:34 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503606965.‎

‎This volume is an exploration of the artistic cultural legacy of some of the most renowned medieval royal women, demonstrating their dedication to remain relevant for all time. Summary Medieval Mausoleums, Monuments, and Manuscripts: Royal Women?s Patronage from the Twelfth to the Fourteenth Centuries explores the manuscripts, monuments, and other memorabilia associated with the artistic patronage of Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204), her daughters, Marie de Champagne (1145-98) and Matilda of Saxony (1156-98), as well as works generated by three queens of France, Marie de Brabant (1254-1322), Jeanne d? vreux (1310-71), and Blanche de Navarre (1330-98). Through this study the shift in women?s artistic patronage over the centuries may be brought to light, as well as its evolution, evincing how each generation built upon the previous one. Further, despite the assorted shapes these women?s efforts embodied, ranging from manuscripts to stained glass windows, from funerary plaques, paintings, jewels and linens to monuments, mausoleums and endowments of institutions, including a variety of other forms, these women were notably unified in that their greatest output tellingly occurred during precarious points in their lives that threatened their positions, such as the potential political turmoil associated with the deaths of husbands or children. At these times their participation in acts of patronage solidified their places at court, in society, and within cultural memory while doubling as assertions of their political power and lineage. Thus, testaments, manuscript books, monuments, and memorials were not only a declaration or signs of one?s possessions, but also sites and documents that continued the politicking of the deceased. ‎New Trends in Feminine Spirituality The Holy Women of Liege and their Impact.,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1999 Hardback, XIV+350 p., 160 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503507682.‎

‎The essays in this volume examine not only the beguinage religious life in the southern Low Countries, but also the impact of this movement on later medieval Sweden, England and France, the new modes of influence by women in their religious lives, and the revivals of feminine spirituality. Was there a women's movement in the thirteenth century and is such a question meaningful in its medieval context? Far from being resolved, the issue of whether women had a thirteenth-century renaissance has still decisively to unsettle the periodization of Western European history in twelfth and sixteenth-century humanist renaissances. Herbert Grundmann long ago demonstrated the participation of women in the eremitically-inspired reforming movements of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and in the production of vernacular literature. Yet it is upon his work that this volume builds, for the diocese of Liege is the key area in this development. It was from Liege that Jacques de Vitry approached the papacy to secure permission for the women of this bishopric of Liege, France and Germany to live together and to promote holiness in each other by mutual example. The seventeen contributors to this volume examine not only the beguine religious life in the southern Low Countries, but also the impact of this movement on later medieval Sweden, England and France, the new modes of influence exerted by women in their religious lives, and the revivals of feminine spirituality in the late medieval West through to contemporary North America. Research does not yet allow for a whole new synthesis, but this volume directs scholars to detailed work on specific localities and persons, with an awareness of the problems and possibilities of wider European comparisons. The contributors are: Jocelyn Wogan-Browne and Marie-Elisabeth Henneau, Anne Blonstein, Else Marie Wiberg Pedersen, Alexandra Barratt, Penny Galloway, Brenda Bolton, Bridget Morris, Marjorie Curry Woods, Carolyne Larrington, Anneke B. ‎Household, Women, and Christianities in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2006 Hardback, X+262 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503517780.‎

‎The essays within this volume unite study of the medieval household with that of women's religious practices, providing a new avenue of enquiry the history of the church. Both as God's house and as the dwellings of his monastic and other followers, the history of the church is in part that of an institution conceived as a household. In recent years, secular life and lifestyles in late antiquity and the Middle Ages have been illuminated through renewed attention to the economic and social history of households, while scholarship on women has produced studies of the lives and the devotional reading of laywomen and women religious. This volume is a pioneering collection that unites study of the household with women's religious practices as a focus of enquiry. It moves beyond consideration of the church's roles in women's history to the impact of women's householding on the history of the church. Languages : English.‎

‎Performing Polity Women and Agency in the Anglo-French Tradition, 1385-1620,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2006 Hardback, VI+218 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503518008.‎

‎This volume draws on political and gender theories to provide fresh readings of a variety of texts centred in the power and agency of women during the period 1385 to 1620. Reading a variety of texts centred in the power and agency of women during the period 1385 to 1620, this book examines changing ideals of gender within the context of changing ideologies of governance and polity. Together the essays that comprise this book lay out three lines of thinking about women and polity: that the ideology of late medieval gender roles articulated in Anglo-French texts of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries outlined important roles for women?s voice and agency in supporting the larger polity as well as the smaller household; that the acceptance and the value of those roles diminished as models of polity in both Church and State in England changed in the early modern period; that to see this change merely in terms of change in expectations of gender roles is to miss the vital link between the status of women and the political construction of individual relationship to authority. Woman is the site on which society delineates the degree of freedom and independence it will tolerate in the political subject. The attention directed to women?s roles in the plethora of woman-centred stories, courtesy books, prayer books, sermons and tracts in the period 1385-1620 is an index to shifting alignments of power that replaced medieval models of partnership and co-operation with models of obedience. ‎St Anselm and the Handmaidens of God A Study of Anselm's Correspondence with Women<br>‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2002 Hardcover. XII 336 p., 26 b/w ill., 6 b/w line art, 165 x 245 mm, Languages: English, Latin, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503513379.‎

‎As abbot of Bec and archbishop of Canterbury, the renowned theologian St. Anselm spent most of his career working ?in the world?, primarily with laypersons, not in the cloister. His correspondence contains surprisingly many letters to laywomen, only a few perfunctory letters to nuns and abbesses. Anselm wrote to all estates of noble laywomen: young girls, mothers, mature wives or widows, countesses and queens. Vaughn argues that Anselm collected and edited his own letters, which addressed real women and situations, but also represented particular ideals of women, marriage, parents and children, students and teachers; that the correspondence, an artful construct, was almost an autobiography, teaching by word, deed, and his own example; and a lens through which to discern Anselm?s views of men and women in Anselm?s ideal society. Anselm accords women surprising equality and power, seeing queens as equal to both kings and archbishops, all three primarily as nurturers and teachers, and ideal married couples writ large ? social views modelled on past ideals (primarily St. Gregory), but ironically leaping toward new Twelfth Century attitudes of introspection, self-analysis, individualism, and logic and reason in theology, social issues, politics and law. Mothers and teachers emerge as the ultimate Handmaidens of God.‎

‎Jonathan Meese: Spitzenmeesige Women (Schniddeldiddelson) ‎

‎Antwerpen , Tim Van Laere Books 2015, 2015 Bound, 106 pages, English.‎

‎In his second solo exhibition at the Tim Van Laere Gallery, the German artist Jonathan Meese (b. 1970, Tokyo, lives and works in Berlin and Hamburg) is presenting a new series of paintings and drawings focusing on women. They are starring his mother, Barbarella, Lolita, Fr ulein K.U.N.S.T., Scarlett Johansson, Mumina, Nofretete and Cara Delevingne, who currently is not only Britain?s favourite Topmodel but also Topgurner?making fun of herself by playing with her face, showing what a useful mask it is: a subversive, humorous and playful performative act Meese deeply relates to in his art. Women?this theme seems unusual for Meese at first sight, whose work is mainly identified with rather masculine dominated subjects like world history, original myths and heroic legends. On closer examination one discovers, though, that from the beginning women play an important role in Meese?s painterly and also sculptural work. His early paintings from 2000, show an almost classical approach of act painting, following the tradition of the femme fatale. Although his artistic expression has changed to a more and more abstract expressionist style, his women still often appear in the role of an enchantress, seductress, vampire or witch. But Meese was never really concerned with the destructive power of the female sex inherent in this theme. Nor was he intent upon gender-specific questions. He even queries them in his performances, playing the role of a woman (Zarathustra ? Die Gestalten sind unterwegs with Martin Wuttke in 2006), and in paintings showing figures with genitals of both sexes. To Meese the femme fatale is only interesting as an archetype of art, as a symbol of power. That applies to the image of the mother, too. Meese depicted his own mother, Brigitte, in many portraits and installations (MOR with TAL R in 2005)?as an animal, a general, a vampire and the goddess Isis and many more. Following Nietzsche, the mother in the artist?s eyes is ?the industry of nature.? Known for the deconstruction of pictorial codes, Meese renews in his latest work the persistent power of often clich d symbols which relate to the women as much as to love, the origin and nature: the heart, the spiral and the strawberry.‎

‎This collection of essays charts the role of women at the Burgundian court by analysing the ways in which medieval women, such as Isabella of Portugal, Margaret of York, Mary of Burgundy, Margaret of Austria made an impact through their physical, moral and spiritual presence at court. During the absence of the prince these well-educated and internationally experienced spouses, mothers and aunts were put in charge of the courtly household or were in some cases appointed regent of the Netherlandish territories for a limited period of time. The youngest generation of women represented by the sisters and consorts of Charles V and Ferdinand I - now forming part of the extended family network ? continued this tradition and took it to Germany, Spain, France and Portugal. The court developed into a kind of 'gender laboratory', in which women actively negotiated their position of power, thus consolidating their influence in politics, diplomacy, education and art. ‎Medieval Women - Texts and Contexts in Late Medieval Britain Essays in Honour of Felicity Riddy,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2000 Hardback, XVI+436 p., 160 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503509792.‎

‎Profiting from the development of newly flexible models of gender, literacy, the political, the social, and the domestic, this volume on medieval women considers the broadest implications for the study of medieval culture without simply re-absorbing medieval women into invisibility. In this themed collection of 24 articles by literary, historical and archaeological scholars, the study of medieval women is confidently and freshly mainstream. Profiting from the development of newly flexible models of gender, literacy, the political, the social, and the domestic, the volume is non-separatist, exploratory both of new source materials and new readings of established sources, and able to consider the broadest implications for the study of medieval culture without simply re-absorbing medieval women into invisibility. Grouped under the headings of matters of reading, of conduct and place, the essays move from legal cases to actual buildings and conceptions of the household to conduct books and chronicles to romances and saints' lives to the medieval unconscious and back again, exemplifying the mature interdisciplinarity of current work on medieval women. ‎Seeing and Knowing Women and Learning in Medieval Europe, 1200-1550,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Hardback, X+205 p., 1 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503514482.‎

‎The studies within this volume apply insights gained from gender studies to re-consider the way knowledge and learning was transmitted in medieval Europe 1200-1550. Traditional scholarship has largely concentrated on the clerical and academic context of conventional learning. It tended to focus on the contents and methods of formal education, as well as on a small group of educational institutions from which women were excluded. In this volume, authors consider how learning was transmitted outside the schools, in particular within women's communities. They raise a range of questions: how was knowledge transmitted in an oral context, what varieties of knowledge were available to communities of women? What kinds of learning are characteristic of such communities? What techniques did women develop to preserve and transmit their knowledge and how was it valorized both within their communities, and by 'authoritative' outsiders? Under what circumstances could women themselves gain authority in passing on knowledge to a wider audience? Languages : English.‎

‎Partners in Spirit Women, Men, and Religious Life in Germany, 1100-1500,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, approx. X+249 p., 7 b/w ill., 2 b/w line art, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503540962.‎

‎Partners in Spirit focuses on relations between chaste men and women within religious life in Germany (c. 1100-1500), concentrating on the complex set of negotiations that governed contact between a male priest and his female charge. Although religious women were undeniably reliant on priests for pastoral care (the cura monialium) throughout the medieval period, it does not follow that men saw such care as burdensome or that women were spiritually subordinate in their relations with priests. Within the context of the cura, ordained men and professed women met regularly, often developing intimate friendships and providing each other with crucial spiritual support, despite prevailing fears that contact between the sexes must result in sexual temptation and sin. Examining the various interactions of priests with religious women, Partners in Spirit traces the ways in which both viewed the cura, highlighting the fluidity of gender and authority within the medieval religious life. In so doing, the volume suggests new ways of considering the intersection of gender, religion, and spiritual power within the medieval world. Languages : English.‎

‎Femmes Fatales : Strong Women in Fashion‎

‎, Waanders BV, Uitgeverij 2019, 2019 Hardcover, 208 pages/pagina's, Nederlands/English, ex in prima staat, met veel illustraties in kleur, . ISBN 9789462622098.‎

‎Features work by an impressive list of international female designers. Besides the internationally famous names, it also considers the women behind the scenes of many fashion houses, whose far-reaching influence is something that has been completely overlooked in fashion history. Published to accompany an exhibition at Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, The Hague. 'The little seamstress' is how the renowned Coco Chanel was once disdainfully described by her contemporary Paul Poiret. He targeted her because she was a woman, but in fact he saw her as a major competitor. Times have changed. More fashion houses are now run by women than ever before. A perfect moment, therefore, for an overview that focuses on strong women in fashion. Femmes Fatales tells fashion history from the perspective of femail designers. Do they design differently for women than their male counterparts? What influence have they had? What does being a woman mean in terms of their creations? And what is their vision for fashion? This book includes work by Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli, Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood, Sonia Rykiel, Zandra Rhodes, Miuccia Prada, Maria Grazia Chiuri (Dior), Fong Leng, Sheila de Vries and Iris van Herpen, and many others. Text in Dutch and English.‎
