‎<p>Lors d'une conférence de presse au Van Gogh Museum d'Amsterdam en novembre 2018, l'auteur de cet ouvrage révélait qu'une des deux seules photographies connues du peintre Vincent van Gogh était en réalité celle de son frère Theo. L'enquête qui a mené à cette découverte inattendue est truffée d'anecdotes inédites, de rencontres passionnantes et de rebondissements dignes d'un thriller. A la suite de cette première trouvaille, Yves Vasseur a pu entrer en contact avec les descendants de Samuel Delsaut, qui découvrit en 1958, dans son grenier prés de Mons, deux dessins attribués à Van Gogh, aujourd'hui conservés à la National Gallery of Art de Washington. Les archives de la famille Delsaut ont dévoilé un imbroglio romanesque au point de faire planer un doute sur l'authenticité de ces dessins, ainsi qu'une abondante correspondance entre Carlo Delsaut, fils de Samuel, et Paul Gachet, fils du docteur Gachet qui soigna Vincent van Gogh à Auvers- sur-Oise. Ces échanges ont à leur tour permis à l'auteur de retracer à la fois l'histoire d'un tableau de Van Gogh inexistant et celle d'un tableau de Paul Gachet disparu... ‎Voor Vincent van Gogh was tekenen 'de wortel van alles'. Dat verklaart de grote hoeveeldheid tekeningen die de kunstenaar tijdens zijn korte, turbulente leven heeft gerealiseerd: meer dan duizend werken, veelal een weerslag van persoonlijke, vaak eenzame verkenningen in de opkomende moderne wereld, en van angsten, iets wat ons vandaag nog steeds aanspreekt. De tekeningen van Vincent van Gogh is een uitgediept relaas van het genie en de eigenheid van wat de kunstenaar op dat gebied verwezenlijkt heeft. Kunsthistoricus Christopher Lloyd onderzocht vanuit een nieuw perspectief Van Goghs werken op papier. Door de tekeningen thematisch te bestuderen - van doordachte figuurstudies over prachtig weergegeven plekken en landschappen tot pakkende portretten - wist hij de successen, mislukkingen, experimenten, beproevingen en teleurstellingen van de kunstenaar vast te leggen. Christopher Lloyd is een Brits kunsthistoricus en was van 1988 tot 2005 'Surveyor of The Queen's Pictures', curator van de schilderijen van de Royal Collection.
