‎Caen Castle A ten centuries-old fortress within the town,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Hardback, approx. 128 p., 18 x 18. ISBN 9782902685752.‎

‎Founded by William the Conqueror, the castle of Caen was 'rediscovered' after WWII, offering up more and more historical information thanks to archaeologists and historians working on the project, starting with Michel de Bouard. Although the evidence of the first duke's palace is today rather scant, the hall of the 'Exchequer' has retained some that magnificence that it must have exuded in the XIIth century, despite the transformations it has undergone through time. As for the castle keep, which was torn down during the French Revolution, its foundations continue to fascinate many a visitor, drawing upon the Anglo-Norman origins of the edifice, whereas the porte des Champs built in the XIIIth century harks back to the days of the return of Normandy to French possession and finally the Saint-Pierre barbican recalls the Hundred Years' War. One should nevertheless not forget what the castle enceinte with its towers and drawbridge used to be in the Middle Ages ? a town within the town, with its parish church dedicated to Saint-George. Today, the castle lies in the heart of the town, having been restored to its pride of place, and has become an essential cultural venue, housing none other than the Museum of Normandy, the Rampart Rooms and the Musee des Beaux-Arts which draw art and history lovers from across the world. (1808)

‎An Oration, Pronounced July 4 1808, at the Request of the Selectmen of the Town of Boston. In Commemoration of the Anniversary of American Independence.‎

‎Boston: Russell & Cutler 1808 ‎

‎First edition. Pamphlet, disbound. Title with printer's vignette, "vote of the town", text. There is an owner's inscription on the title leaf. (Isaac Porter from Wm. Porter). There is some browning and foxing throughout (heavier towards the end); the first and last leaf are detached, the rest of the pamphlet loosely bound together. 19, [i] pp. 205 x 130 mm (8 x 5 inches). Orations were given annually in Boston, often called "municipal Orations"; typically two or more addresses were given. The impetus for the tradition of municipal orations in Boston stemmed from an act passed at a town meeting in March 1783, when it was decided that the annual celebration of commemorating the Boston Massacre of March 5, 1770, be replaced with a yearly Independence Day celebration. The local newspaper reported following this oration: "The Repertory tells us that Mr. Ritchie delivered an excellent Oration. So much the better for Mr. Ritchie! The Oration was doubtless federal, else it could not have been excellent, and it must have abused the President, else it could not have been federal, and it was delivered on the anniversary of independence, a fit federal occasion for abusing the government of our choice! " (American Mercury, 11 August 1808, 2)‎

‎Innovation and Medieval Communities. The Circulation of Ideas and Practices in and out of the Town (1200-1500)‎

‎, Brepols, 2026 Hardback, Pages: 288, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, 39 col., 4 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503596471.‎

‎Summary It has to be said that when it came to innovation medieval culture demonstrated its mastery of the art of the paradox. Medieval people were compelled to innovate, driven by the dissatisfaction that is part of their nature, leading to changes that could generate not only enthusiasm, but also mistrust and sometimes fear. In a world where innovation was ordinarily perceived in a negative light, societies developed discursive strategies to legitimize such developments, even going so far as to make the old out of the new. This book interrogates this gap between cultural assumptions and practical necessity. Drawing on numerous examples from the towns and cities of Western Europe between the thirteenth and the fifteenth centuries, it examines in context and in practice both sophisticated conceptions and unexamined habits of thought concerning innovation. These offered a range of possibilities for dealing with the new, often imposing novelty quietly, as the only means of maintaining the old state of affairs... at least in appearance. ‎Englands Grievance Discovered, In relation to the Coal-Trade with the Map of the River of Tine, and Situation of the Town and Corporation of Newcastle. - [ONE OF THE EARLIEST WORKS ON THE ENGLISH COAL TRADE]‎

‎London, R. Ibbitson & P. Stent, 1655. 4to. In contemporary full calf. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Wear to extremities, scratches and stains to boards. Ex-libris pasted on to verso of front board. First 20 leaves with a few small worm-tracts in outer lower margin, only slightly touching text. Outer margin closely trimmed, slightly touching the printed marginal notes on a few leaves. (8), 211 pp. 23 engravings in text. Wanting the folded map. ‎

‎Uncommon first edition of one of the earliest books relating to the English coal trade. This work sheds light on the grievances of locals in the North East of England during the mid-seventeenth century. In 1653, Gardiner was imprisoned by the Hostmen of Newcastle upon Tyne for his refusal to cease operations at his brewery in North Shields, a small town situated to the east of Newcastle. The Hostmen, a powerful corporation of local merchants, had significant control over the trade, particularly in coal, along the River Tyne. Despite limitations imposed by the House of Commons, they exerted influence over various ports in the North East of England. “Gardiner's petition to Oliver Cromwell, published in 1655 (the present work), demanded that the Hostmen had abused their powers, and that trade ought to be opened up on the Tyne and elsewhere. He suggested that North Shields gain a market to facilitate trade, and to help the garrison at nearby Tynemouth. Gardiner's pleas were ultimately unsuccessful. However, the Hostmen's influence did begin to diminish. This was primarily due to the increased production of coal and other goods in the region, as well as Parliamentary support for competition from other local ports such as Sunderland and Blyth.” (Royal Collection Trust) Goldsmiths 1347‎

Ce volume, publié sous le titre “Memoirs of the Life of Colonel Hutchinson”, rassemble en fait plusieurs pièces : un fragment autobiographique (« The Life of Mrs. Hutchinson Written by Herself.
