(1808)

‎Camara Optica Folheto VIII onde as vistas ás avessas mostrão o mundo as direitas.‎

‎First edition. A rare satirical publication, produced anonymously, but by Da Costa. In Portuguese. This was published in 12 parts between 1807 and 1811. This part was printed in 1808. Disbound / unbound, as initially published. It was intended to be gathered together, but each part is complete in itself. The author tells several moral tales, which portray life upside down! It was indeed for the Portuguese at this time. France, under Napoleon, demanded Portugal halt trade with Britain and join the Continental System; when Portugal delayed, General Junot invaded on November 19, 1807, with Spanish support as per the Treaty of Fontainebleau, occupying Lisbon by November 30 as the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil. Several of the items in this work are written as "letters to a friend." Although it doesn't say who the friend is, he refers to them as "your majesties." There are also references to "Boqueirao do Caes do Sodre" a recently restored public garden in Rio de Janeiro (where the Royal Family were). The last leaf has a verse riddle, the answer to which will be given in a later issue. There is a manuscript answer to the riddle on the page. The tone of the work is Anti-French, referring to them as "our cruel protectors." The colophon is to the last leaf, which as well as publisher and date, states that the work is printed with the permission of the Royal Court. 32 pages. 22cm x 16cm. The whole work (12 parts) is referenced in WorldCat / OCLC: 613411936 which states only one library holding. In good, clean condition with a touch of edge wear only. Sewn binding is firm. A touch of darkening to the front cover. .‎

‎Camara Optica Folheto XII onde as vistas ás avessas mostrão o mundo as direitas.‎

He mockingly suggests that the delay in publishing this part, was because Napoleon asked him to delay its publication until after his second nuptials. There are several paragraphs devoted to a fictitious correspondence with Josephine. Disbound / unbound, as initially published. It was intended to be gathered together, but each part is complete in itself. The author tells several moral tales, which portray life upside down! It was indeed for the Portuguese at this time. ‎Logick: Or, The Right Use of Reason in the Enquiry after Truth, with A Variety of Rules to guard against Error, in the Affairs of Religion and Human Life, as well as the Sciences. - [THE STANDARD TEXT BOOK ON LOGIC]‎

‎London, Printed for John Clark and Richard Hett, 1725. Small 8vo. Cont. full calf, expertly rebacked in old style w. five raised bands on back and gilt leather title-label. Some scratches to boeards and some bumbing to corners. (2), VI, (8, -table of contents + books published by the same author), 534 (2, -advertisements, i.e. errata) pp.‎

‎First edition of Watt's standard text book of philosophical logic, which was used as the basic introduction to this field for more than 100 years at Oxford University, also occupying the place as the standard text on logic at Cambridge, Harvard and Yale throughout the 18th century and well into the 19th. Isaac Watts (1674-1748) is considered the father of English hymnody and is considered one of the most important hymn-writerS ever in Great Britain. But Watts was not only a hymn-writer, he was also a renowned logician and theologian, and today he is primarily famous within these fields as the author of his text book in logic, ""Logick..."" from 1725, which became hugely popular and served as a standard introduction to the field for more than 100 years. The work went through twenty editions, bearing witness to its great popularity. The work is arranged systematically and divided into four general parts: 1. Of Perceptions and Ideas, II. Of Judgment and Proposition, III. Of Reason and Syllogism, IV. Of Method. The work not merely served as a basic text book for beginners of logic, though, it also contains new ideas and new approaches to old problems. The influence of Watts' contemporary John Locke is especially noticeable with many references to his ""Essay on Humane Understanding"". But a thing that distinguishes Watts' Logic from others of the time, and perhaps the reason why it became so hugely popular, is his constant focus on the practicability of logic instead of the merely speculative approach to it, which again made his logic useful in connection with general problems of philosophy and science. Unusual for his time, Watts here distinguishes between the practical and the speculative part of logic and treats of both parts, anticipating later logicians such as Peirce. C.S. Peirce also described Watts' ""Logick"" as being ""far superior to the treatises now used in colleges, being the production of a man distinguished for good sense"" (see The Collected Papers of Charles Sanders Peirce, vol.II, 1933).‎

(1756)

‎A Letter to the Right Honourable George, Earl of Macclesfield, President of the Royal Society, as to the Advantage of taking the Mean of a Number of Observations in Practical Astronomy - [""A MILESTONE IN STATISTICAL INFERENCE, AS WELL AS THE EARLIEST FORMAL TREATMENT OF ANY DATA-PROCESSING PRACTICE""]‎

‎(London, L. Davis, 1756). 4to. In recent marbled wrappers. In ""Philosophical Transactions"", Volume 49, 1755. All leaves reinforced in margin. Fine and clean. (14) [Leaves of contents to to vol. 49] Pp. 82-93 ‎

‎First edition of Simpson’s landmark paper: ""a milestone in statistical inference, as well as the earliest formal treatment of any data-processing practice"" (Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace). “Simpson was the first to attempt a mathematical proof of the law of large numbers" i.e., that the mean result of several observations is nearer to the truth than any single observations. A key feature of the paper was that Simpson chose to focus “not on the observations themselves . . . but on the error made in the observations, on the differences between the recorded observations and the actual position of the body being observed. . . [This] was the critical step that was to open the door to an applicable quantification of uncertainty” (Stigler 1986, 90-91). “Simpson was the first to characterize the errors in observations as independent events, taking positive and negative values with equal probabilities, and the first to provide a mathematical expression for the probability that the error in the mean result will lie between assigned limits” (Origins of Cyberspace, no 16.)
