‎Première édition en volume (les premières publications en revue sont partielles). Petite fente réparée à un mors, rousseurs principalement sur les feuillets liminaires. « Le cas de David Copperfield est, on s'en doute, d'une complexité et d'une massivité décourageante, car c'est de bien loin le plus populaire en France des romans de Dickens. On ne sait même pas laquelle des deux versions publiées en 1851 mérite le titre de première traduction française de ce chef-d'oeuvre. Le fait que l'une d'elles fut annoncée comme "troisième édition" quand elle parut pour la première fois en volume (parce que des fragments avaient déjà vu le jour dans un périodique) donne lieu de soupçonner une rivalité commerciale farouche. Il s'agit du Copperfield d'Amédée Pichot, ingénieusement intitulé Le Neveu de ma tante, ouvrage également publié en 1851 à Bruxelles chez Lebègue, mais sous le titre Souvenirs de David Copperfield, et en six volumes, sans nom de traducteur, d'où l'impression d'un emprunt plutôt que d'une cession. Une autre édition belge, sous le même titre et en autant de volumes, fut publiée en 1850-1851, et c'est peut-être la plus ancienne version complète de Copperfield en français, alors que des extraits de la version Pichot avaient paru dans sa revue Britannique encore plus tôt (le 3ème fragment se trouve dans le numéro de janvier 1820). » (Sylvère Monod - Romantisme, 1999, Volume 29, Numéro 106, pp. 123-124). Première édition française, traduite de l'anglais par Amédée Pichot (malgré la mention de "3ème édition plus complète que les précédentes" figurant sur le titre se référant à la publication préalable de fragments en revue). David Copperfield ou L'Histoire, les aventures et l'expérience personnelles de David Copperfield le jeune (en anglais : The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger), est le huitième roman de Charles Dickens et le premier de cet auteur à présenter un narrateur à la première personne. Il a été publié en vingt numéros et dix-neuf parutions, par Bradbury and Evans, entre 1849 et 1850, avec des illustrations de Hablot Knight Browne, dit Phiz. Beaucoup considèrent ce roman comme le chef-d'œuvre de Dickens. Situé au milieu de la carrière de Dickens, il représente un tournant dans son œuvre, le point de séparation entre les romans de la jeunesse et ceux de la maturité tout en se révélant être l'ouvrage le plus autobiographique de l'auteur.
