‎De regeerperiode van Karel de Grote ligt al eeuwen achter ons, maar de herinnering aan hem is nog steeds levendig. Hij was koning der Franken, Frankisch keizer van de christelijke wereld en wordt vandaag gezien als de vader van Europa. Via een kritische lectuur van de nieuwe inzichten die het historisch onderzoek de voorbije jaren opleverde, gaat Raoul Bauer in dit boek daarom op zoek naar de historische waarheid en de betekenis van Karel de Grote. Het boek volgt hem op zijn veldtochten, ziet hem als bestuurder van een immens rijk, bespreekt de betekenis van zijn keizerskroning in 800, maakt hem mee in zijn zoektocht naar kennis en ontmoet hem tenslotte als een bezorgde familievader. ‎Summary Peter Paul Rubens already had assistants working for him in his studio when he first gained admission to the Antwerp Guild of St Luke in 1598. At this period too he began to co-operate with other masters, such as Jan Brueghel the Elder; a separate volume, dedicated to that collaboration, was published in 2016 (Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, XXVII (1): Jan Brueghel I & II). On his return from Italy in 1609, not only did Rubens?s studio assistants increase in number, so too did the co-operative projects that the artist undertook. Rubens continued to work with Jan Brueghel the Elder until 1621. When Brueghel died in 1625, his son Jan continued the partnership with Rubens until the latter?s death in 1640. Similarly productive was the collaboration between Rubens and the still life and animal painter Frans Snijders. It began shortly after Rubens's return to Antwerp and is reflected in various large-format works for the courts of Brussels and Madrid [?], but also in smaller ?cabinet? paintings, some of which were executed by members of the respective workshops of the two masters. The collaboration soon extended to the studio of the animal painter Paul de Vos, whose sister Margriete had married Snijders in 1611. One such joint painting was still in Rubens?s possession at the time of his death and was listed in the 1640 catalogue of the works for sale from the artist?s estate. This document also reveals that, among the paintings by other masters that he owned, Rubens possessed a surprisingly large quantity by the Dutch landscape and genre painter Cornelis Saftleven. Rubens had worked with Saftleven during his stay in Antwerp at the beginning of the 1630s, and evidently appreciated his talent, even if this collaboration can be represented only by a single painting. The present is devoted to Rubens?s fruitful partnership with Frans Snijders, as well as to his collaborations with Paul de Vos and Cornelis Saftleven. ‎When Bartolomeo Sacchi ('Platina', 1421-1481) wrote his Vitae pontificum (Lives of the Popes) and presented it to Pope Sixtus IV in 1475, he surely could not have imagined how influential it would become over the centuries. His was the first papal history composed as a humanist Latin narrative and, as such, marked a distinct breakthrough in relation to the Liber pontificalis, the standard medieval chronicle of the papacy. Whatever Platina's intentions for the book, it soon came to be regarded as the official history of the Roman pontiffs. After the editio princeps of Venice 1479, updated and extended editions continued to be produced until late in the eighteenth century. The largely untold story of Platina's Lives of the Popes and its fortuna is the focus of this book. The Lives were particularly popular because of Platina's frank criticisms of papal behaviour which did not live up to his humanist moral values. He reminded the popes that they were mere human beings and urged them not to indulge in luxury and nepotism. Catholics, whether or not they agreed with such indictments, read the Lives eagerly, while Protestants naturally appreciated Platina's fault-finding approach towards the papacy. The role which censorship played in the reception of the Lives was previously unknown. This book examines the censorship process (1587-1592) in detail, including a critical edition of the assessments and corrections by English and Italian censors newly uncovered in the Vatican and in Milan. ‎Mémoires d'un jeune batteur de jazz, à Londres et engagé dans les Forces Françaises Libres dès 1940 : missions en France et aux Etats-Unis, puis speaker à la BBC pour déclarer tous les soirs : « Ici, Londres, les Français parlent aux Français ». Chaque soir, Franck Bauer a prononcé cette phrase légendaire, au micro de la BBC ! Il n'est qu'un adolescent de quatorze ans en 1933 quand, au retour d'un séjour linguistique dans l'Allemagne nouvellement nazie, il déclare à ses parents : "On va avoir la guerre, on va la perdre et ce jour-là, je m'en irai..." Il tient sa promesse dès juin 1940. Avec sa jeune sœur, devant l'invasion allemande, il traverse la France à vélo. Sa sœur blessée, Franck embarque seul au Verdon-sur-Mer, sur un bateau chargé de soldats polonais. Personne n'a encore entendu parler de De Gaulle. Quelques jours plus tard, pourtant, à vingt et un ans, Franck Bauer est à Londres engagé dans les Forces françaises libres. Ce jeune batteur de jazz était bien mal préparé aux missions militaires qui allaient lui être confiées ! Envoyé en Cornouailles britannique auprès des pêcheurs bretons ralliés à de Gaulle, il participe à deux missions en territoire français occupé, dont une sur l'île de Sein. Puis, le voici expédié aux Etats-Unis, pour y vérifier qu'un complot ne se fomente pas contre la marine marchande fidèle à l'amiral Muselier. A son retour, Franck Bauer est détaché par Maurice Schumann à la BBC, la radio de la vérité et de l'espoir. En France, la famille de Franck attendra deux ans avant de savoir qu'il est à Londres, où entre deux bombardements il retrouve Stéphane Grappelli et tapote sur le clavier avec un piètre pianiste mais non moins grand pilote du nom de Mouchotte... 40 à Londres est un récit mi-héros mi-zazou, où l'éducation sentimentale se fait en même temps que se forge la conscience politique. ‎A vingt ans, Charlie Bauer est un jeune marginal du quartier de l’Estaque, à Marseille. Rebelle à l’ordre social, un temps militant communiste, il participe avec une bande à des cambriolages, à des pillages de magasins. Arrêté, il est condamné à vingt ans de réclusion criminelle. Commence alors un affreux périple dans les geôles françaises, des Baumettes à Clairvaux, Fresnes ou Lisieux. Parce qu’il refuse d’être broyé par la machine pénitentiaire, Bauer devient un insoumis derrière les murs. Cette attitude, il la paie de neuf années d’isolement, au cachot ou dans les QHS. Pour survivre, Bauer poursuit des études – il passe deux licences –, pratique l’exercice physique, cherche à s’évader. Et surtout, il lutte. Contre le temps. Contre l’exclusion et l’asservissement. Après quatorze ans de détention, il bénéficie d’une libération conditionnelle. Il est alors contacté par Jacques Mesrine, en cavale, dont il devient l’ami. Arrêté à nouveau, après l’exécution de l’Ennemi public n°1, il replonge pour dix ans, jusqu’à sa sortie de prison en 1988. Ce récit, parfois insoutenable, toujours dérangeant, d’un quart de siècle passé derrière les barreaux, constitue un témoignage exceptionnel sur l’univers carcéral. ‎Ein Russe war der Erste, der im Bergell breit fotografierte: der zaristische Finanzbeamte Anton von Rydzewski (1836 ? -1913) aus Sankt Petersburg, der später in Dresden lebte. Vor gut hundert Jahren machte er im damals kaumbeachteten Tal 2000 Aufnahmen, die ein Jahrhundert lang vergessen oder verschollen waren. Bei der Arbeit am Wanderbuch «Grenzland Bergell» stiessen Ursula Bauer und Jürg Frischknecht auf über 400 Rydzewski-Fotografien: im Museum Alpin in Pontresina, im Museum für Kommunikation in Bern, im Bergell und schliesslich dank Zufall und Glück bei Nachfahren in Berlin. Aus diesen Funden entstand die viel beachtete Ausstellung «Ein Russ im Bergell», die in Maloja und Chiavenna zu sehen war. Nun stellen Bauer und Frischknecht den ersten Fotografen des Tals in einem Buch vor. Erst mit fünfzig Jahren verfiel «der Russ» den Bergen und kam so ins Bergell. Dank dem legendären Führer Christian Klucker gelangen ihm zahlreiche Erstbesteigungen. Der Alpinist fotografierte nicht nur Gipfel und Gletscher, sondern auch Land und Leute: Steinbrucharbeiter und Hotelangestellte,einheimische Familien, Bergführer und Hirten, Schmuggler und Grenzbeamte ? und als frühe «Reportage» einen Bergamasker Alpaufzug. Die Hälfte der heutebekannten Originalabzüge entstand bis 1900. Rydzewski träumte von einem reich bebilderten Prachtsband «Das Bergell». Das Fotobuch «Ein Russ im Bergell» stellt den beinahe vergessenen Alpinisten, Fotografen und Publizisten vor und macht über hundert Aufnahmen zugänglich. Image disp.‎
