(introduction, plate descriptions) + 12 engrav. plates on China paper and a folded engrav. map (of the protestant valleys in Piemont), slight foxing on some plates, in good conditions, dedication signed by the author (Acland) on title, contemporary red half-calf bindings by Edmonds & Remnants in London, richly gilt ornements with title on first cover, all edges gilt, slightly worn corners and spines.‎

‎Presentation copy of the artist. Acland was the publisher, translator and illustrator of "The glorious Recovery by the Vaudois of their Valleys" by Henri Arnaud (J. Murray, London, 1827). This volume, published 4 years later, presents just the map and the 12 fine engravings by Edward Finden, without the text. Accompanied with an introduction to the history of the Vaudois and plate descriptions. The beautiful engravings show the mountain landscapes in northern Italy (Ligury) and France, that were the background of the bloody struggle of the Vaudois to recover their homeland. In 1686 they had been driven from there by Louis XIV and the duke of Savoy and had taken refuge in Switzerland. 3 years later an armed group of 800 Vaudois lead by pastor Henri Arnaud attempted and succeeded in recovering their valleys against an overwhelming enemy and finally obtained an edict of tolerance from duke Victor Amedee II of Savoy for their religion.
